About the Item
A fine impressionist landscape of a pond with lily pads by American artist William Baxter Closson (1848-1926). Closson was born in Thetford, Vermont, and studied at the Lowell Institute in Boston, beginning his career as an engraver for Harper’s Magazine in Europe, as well as for Louis Prang. He then pursued painting with oils and pastels, and was a member of the Boston Art Club, Copley Society, Washington Society of Artists, along with many others. His award winning work was exhibited at both the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, as well as the St. Louis Exposition in 1904 and the Paris Salon. Oil on board, signed lower right, with a Wm. Filene’s Sons Gift Shop label on verso, titled “The Lily Pond” on the other MA gallery label, and housed in a decorative carved giltwood frame.
