About the Item
Colin Campbell Cooper is perhaps best known for his marvelous urban depictions of New York and Philadelphia, which encapsulate the vibrant modernity of these street scenes and skyscrapers. A Philadelphia native, Cooper enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at the age of 23, where he studied with the renowned Thomas Eakins. He greatly admired Eakins, whose unusual scientific approach to painting had a strong influence on the development of Cooper’s own technique. In 1886, Cooper travelled to Europe where he furthered his studies at the Academie Julian in Paris. During his stay in Europe, Cooper fell in love with the picturesque beauty of his surroundings, in particular the majestic architecture of the ancient towns, bridges, and cathedrals.
Upon returning to America, Cooper’s interest in these architectural structures translated into a long series of works focusing on the modern cityscape. These paintings were generously received as evidenced by this critic’s remarks: “Colin Campbell Cooper…is pre-eminently the artist who has shown the modern world that there is beauty, even poetry, in its towering structures of steel, as well as old cathedrals laid stone by stone.”1 Because of his special gift for capturing the beauty of the urban environment, Cooper has often been compared with the prominent American impressionist Childe Hassam.
Cooper was also a firm proponent of plein-air painting, as this quick and lively study titled New York Scene, Chatham Square clearly demonstrates. This small oil sketch was no doubt a study for his larger work Chatham Square, New York, which was exhibited in 1919 at the National Academy of Design and in 1921 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In contrast with this grand and more polished work, Cooper’s delightful oil sketch embodies the loose and energetic nature of his impressionist technique.

Colin Campbell Cooper
Colin Campbell Cooper was an internationally successful painter, known for his impressionist street scenes, landscapes and architectural subjects. Born in Philadelphia in 1856, he studied under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Cooper made the first of many trips to Europe in 1885. Cooper studied at the Académie Julian and the École Delécluse in Paris. Traveling to Belgium, Holland and France, he painted picturesque scenes of European architectural treasures. These paintings gained him worldwide recognition, and he continued to travel in search of unusual landscape and architectural subjects throughout his career. Cooper and his first wife, Emma Lampert, were aboard the RMS Carpathian and assisted with the rescue of survivors from the Titanic. Several of his paintings document the rescue. Emma died in 1920, and Cooper moved to Santa Barbara, California. In 1921, after spending time in Philadelphia and abroad, Cooper settled in California and became Dean of Painting at the Santa Barbara School for the Arts. He married his second wife, Marie Frehsee, in 1927. Cooper was a member of the American Federation of Arts, the American Water Color Society, the National Academy of Design, the New York National Arts Club, the New York Society of Painters, the New York Water Color Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Art Club and the Philadelphia Water Color Club. His works are in the collections of the Art Club of Philadelphia, the Boston Art Club, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Dallas Art Association, the Lotos Club in New York City, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Reading Museum and the St. Louis Museum of Fine Arts. Cooper died in 1937.

Albert Jean Adolphe was known as a decorator, a portrait painter, and a landscape artist. He worked in oil and watercolor. Born in Philadelphia in 1865, he attended the Pennsylvania Museum School of Art. After graduation, he traveled to Europe and studied under Jean Leon Gerome and James Whistler at the Ecole des Beaux Artes in Paris and under DeVriendt in Antwerp.
Adolphe was a member of the Graphic Sketch Club and the Philadelphia Art Club. In 1894, he was awarded a honorable mention at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago and in 1899 he received an honorable mention in Paris. From the Philadelphia Art Club he won the Stotesbury Prize. He did decorative work at the Marlborough-Blenheim Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
For many years, Adolphe showed in Chicago, St. Louis, and in Philadelphia. From 1898 to 1902, he exhibited at the Paris Salon and later in Antwerp and Munich.

Guy Carleton Wiggins was the son of Carleton Wiggins, a painter of landscapes and animals. Wiggins first studied at his father's Art School in Connecticut and later enrolled in the National Academy of Design where he trained with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri, after a brief spell studying architecture at the Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn. At the age of 20 he was already well known and was the youngest American artist to have a work accepted for the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Prior to the onset of World War I, Wiggins travelled to Europe and painted the English countryside. In England he met his future wife Dorothy Stuart Johnson. The couple returned to the US and set up home in Connecticut. He established a year-round art school, the Guy Wiggins Art School, in Essex. He liked to spend his winters in New York and summers in Connecticut.
