About the Item
Signed, verso, 'David R. A. Watson' (American, born 1950), titled, 'Bixby Bridge, Big Surreal #1' and painted in 2023.
Artist Statement:
" 'El Grande Sur' of the early Mexican settlers could only be penetrated by pack horse until the WPA pushed through the Pacific Coast Highway in 1935. The engineering wonder of the Bixby bridge is a focal point of public amazement drawing hundreds of weekend sightseers. Popular movie lore of this bridge will secure its future as an eternal monument. Yet in truth it is not only a bridge but a stunning entrance toward the Big Sur coast which lies beyond. Thus, the iconic Neo-Classical sculpture stands as the primary gateway into the Big Surreal. Crossing the Bixby delivers one into a supra-natural landscape of the coastal tectonic uplift. Onward down from Mount Carmel Peak, through faulted Mesozoic granite rock and Pre-cretaceous metamorphics studded with apertures of marble, flows Bixby Creek into the sea."
