About the Item

Derek Hyatt (1931-2015) Twelve Apostles, West Yorkshire Oil on board 30.6 x 29.3 cm.; (within frame) 45.8 x 43.4 cm. Provenance: The Margaret Bailey collection (1930-2022); Private Collection, United Kingdom. An electric sun perforates jagged plumes of cloud, diffusing the dark formations with a brilliant translucence. The distant cloud-darkened hill ridge demarcates land from sky, while the alternating shadow of the furrowed moorland draws the viewer into the illuminated foreground. A semi-circular arrangement of vertical forms cuts upright through the composition, the disuniform rocks covered with moss and leaning into the ground with the sunken angles of time’s passing. The soil of the inner circle is textured with the tread of visiting footsteps, and its centre punctuated mystically with a bright cluster of pigment. The distinctive stylisation and rich colouring is a particularly fine example of Hyatt’s expressive rendering of his native Yorkshire landscapes. The landscape is undoubtedly that of the Twelve Apostles, a Neolithic stone circle near Hyatt’s home town of Ilkley, West Yorkshire, of which Hyatt was surely familiar. Twelve of the original sixteen to twenty standing stones remain, made from local millstone grit and constructed for the rituals of an unknown Neolithic community. This mystical site typifies his interest in the spiritual symbolism of the ancient landscape in which he sought artistic communion. Hyatt was particularly inspired by John Ruskin’s amalgamation of nature and myth, which he coloured with a unique symbolism, and proclaimed over any formal style. He idiomatically encapsulated his approach as ‘meetings on the moor’, an instinctive awareness of chance encounters with the landscape and its animal inhabitants, indulging his imagination to produce his distinctive interpretations. To borrow from a 2001 review: ‘His work is saturated with observation and with memory; it embraces both the precision of the sharply-etched line and the complexity of paint, layered, scumbled, dragged and dripped, in rich colour’ (Barringer, p. 119). Derek Hyatt was born in Ilkley, West Yorkshire, in 1931. He attended a local grammar school before going on to Leeds College of Art between 1948-1952. Hyatt later attended both Norwich University of the Arts and The Royal College of Art on a scholarship, where he edited the college’s journal, Ark, and was inspired by John Nash and the American Abstract Expressionists. Hyatt taught for a decade at Kingston College of Art, before returning to Yorkshire in 1964 to teach at Leeds Beckett University. Hyatt exhibited widely throughout his lifetime, and his work remained a presence in London for some fifty years, emerging with a succession of exhibitions at the New Art Centre in Chelsea between 1960-6, and soon after championed by Leslie Waddington. Hyatt was a member of the International Artists for Nature Foundation, and in 1990 was honoured as a Companion of the Guild of St George. He was involved in academic work throughout his artistic career, and this included curating works by John Ruskin at the Ruskin Museum in Sheffield. The present work was previously in the collection of Margaret Bailey, a medical social worker and lecturer who assembled a large collection of important Modern British artworks. Born in Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, Bailey went on to study modern history at St Anne’s, Oxford, graduating in 1951. Following study at the London School of Economics, Bailey worked as a medical social worker in London, and later spent three years in the United States where she earned her Master’s degree. Bailey’s interest in Modern British art made for a lifelong commitment to collecting. Spacial limitations in her West Hampstead flat saw works by artists including John Piper, Prunella Clough, and Keith Vaughan, displayed on rotation.
