He studied at the A school of Algiers starting from 1880. In 1882, he got a grant to study at the école des Beaux-Arts of Paris. He was taught then by Jean Léon Gérôme. He started to expose at the Salon des Aristes français in 1890. He also took part in the Salon de Paris between 1894 and 1907. He travelled intensely to Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. His works have great success. In 1910, he was named official painter of the Navy then obtained the Legion d’honneur in 1935.
Eugène Deshaye was inspired by his travels in North Africa, Corsica and the Balearic Islands and painted landscapes in luminous colours, encampments, caravans of people, gardens full of flowers, and views of Algiers. He alson occasionally painted landscapes of Ile de France and Provence.
EXHIBITIONS :
He took part in the Salon of Paris between 1894 and 1907. In 2003, as part of ‘Djazaïr, une année de l’Algérie en France, he featured in two exhibitions :
- « Painters from the other shore, Algiers 1830-1930 » (Cannes Museum)
- « Luminous Algeria through the eyes of seascape painters » (Marine Museum – Toulon)

Ignacio Gil Sala, was a painter, bohemian character, adventurous and intrepid traveler who knew how to capture his eyes to that world with his painting. After starting his artistic training at the age of nine, Gil Sala entered the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he had as teachers Felix Mestres and Vicente Borrás. Already in 1930, being still almost an apprentice, he obtained the bronze medal of the School, and in 1936 he won by contest a scholarship to make a study trip through Spain.
