Donald Roy Purdy
Harbor abstract in Deep Blues

1950

About the Item

Signed lower left: Purdy A very cool example of mid-century 50"s abstraction. Harbor is done in a style that was being experimented with particularly in the New York and California schools of artists. Many were abstracting off scenes or subjects and leaving enough subject that the viewer could distinguish what the scene is. Here it is clearly perhaps a night view and the artist is capturing either a setting sun or lights in the distance - peeking through sails and boats. Purdy at this time would apply oil paint and then rub it away to create layers of washy depth on the surface - a dreamlike feel to what one is seeing. He was also influenced by artists such as Redon and Nolde and once one knows that you can see where he drawing upon in his own work. Art such as this melds well with mid-century furniture. The art inside the frame measures 24 x 39.75 inches Signed in the lower right "purdy" Purdy later moved away from abstraction as some artists did. so these works from this era are rare by him. He had a full and successful career painting in Wilton, CT and at the time of this work - was painting in New Haven, CT. He would have been drawing upon his knowledge of the marinas along the coast and areas such as Norwalk Ct where he grew up. The frame is not original. It is a good quality frame with wear and imperfections at this point. It also has a liner in it. The painting could be re-framed to a different style to one's preference or hand it as is. Head to Sea, Modernist sailing scene
By Ralph Eugene Della-Volpe
Located in Greenwich, CT
A vibrant and yet romantic sailing scene which was a favorite series by Della-Volpe. His compelling colorist approach has made his works desirable as he was one of the few artists post-war to be representative in style like Milton Avery and Wolf Kahn. Head to Sea has the hallmark intense and lovely coloration for which Della-Volpe is known. He came out of Abstract Expressionism in the New York school but then pivoted, like Milton Avery to representational, colorist work. The frame is a silvered gold leaf float frame of quality and has a rubbed, antiqued surface...
