About the Item

Here for your consideration is a beautiful oil on masonite painting by Earl Francis Hofmann. Signed and dated lower left, 1953. Verso is Grand Central Art Gallery label with the title "Coming In". This painting depicts the Baltimore harbor waterfront at Sparrows Point, the site of the Bethleham Steel Company. Overall framed in original period pine frame 21.75 by 28 inches. He was one of a group of artists dubbed the Six Realists and opened a gallery of that name. He was especially well known for his landscapes, often depicting urban industrial scenes. Hofmann's interest in drawing began in grade school and he continued to do commercial art while in the Marines. Later he studied painting at the Maryland Institute under Jacques Maroger. In 1951, while still a student at the Institute, he began exhibiting pictures at the Grand Central Galleries in New York, where he won several prizes and was named a life member. His works are on display at several major museums, including the Butler Museum of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, and the Peale Museum, where he won first prize in the 1958 Life in Baltimore Show. He also created paintings or murals for a number of buildings, including St. Ignatius Church, St. Joseph's Monastery Church and Mercy Medical Center, which has a painting of his variously known as the Madonna of Baltimore. Hofmann's works were also exhibited in two consecutive Corcoran Gallery of Art biennial shows and were included in the Guggenheim Traveling Exhibit that toured the country. His works were also exhibited at the Hilltop Theatre School of Art Gallery in Baltimore and in galleries and museums in New York City, Columbus, Georgia, Sarasota, Florida, Ogunquit, Maine and Miami Beach, Florida. He was a fellow of the International Institute of Arts and Letters. He died in 1992.
