About the Item

Månglitter is a luminous nocturne that captures the tranquil radiance of moonlight dancing across a still expanse of water. In this atmospheric composition, a lone rowboat rests at the water’s edge beneath shadowy trees, while the full moon’s reflection stretches in a shimmering golden path across deep blue-black waves. Hedberg employs a restrained, nocturnal palette – rich indigo and velvety midnight tones contrasted with the silvery glow of moonlight – to evoke a mood of quiet contemplation and mystery. The scene is rendered with broad yet confident brushstrokes, subtly blending realism with a poetic, almost dreamlike quality. The result is a compelling harmony of light and shadow, conveying the hushed stämning(mood) of a Scandinavian night. Painted around 1904–05, Månglitter exemplifies Hedberg’s mastery of stämningsmåleri (mood painting) within his landscape oeuvre. Hedberg – whose given name was Claes Erik Alexander but who went by “Ecke” – was a Swedish landscape painter celebrated for his ability to capture the elusive Nordic light. Educated at the Royal Academy in Stockholm, he later settled in rural Gästrikland (northern Sweden) in 1901, immersing himself in its natural scenery. He has even been called “Gästrikland’s artistic discoverer,” renowned for portraying the province’s lakes, forests, and skies with sensitivity. His talent for depicting nature’s transient light effects is on full display in Månglitter: with bold, expressive brushwork and keen attention to atmospheric detail, Hedberg here captures the Scandinavian Nordic light in the best possible manner. The painting’s serene, moonlit ambiance aligns with Hedberg’s broader fascination with seasonal moods – from autumn twilight scenes to spring dawns – yet Månglitter stands out as an especially refined and technically accomplished example in his body of work. Månglitter made its debut at a notable 1905 exhibition in Stockholm. In March of that year, Hedberg participated in a joint show at Konstnärshuset (Artists’ House) alongside his contemporaries Wilhelm Smith and Pelle Swedlund. Listed as “Månglitter” in the exhibition catalogue (no. 14), the painting garnered critical acclaim during the show. The writer Henning Berger, reviewing the exhibition, singled out Månglitter for its exceptional technical quality, observing that its execution surpassed even Hedberg’s other seasonal works on display. Berger praised the piece’s confident technique and enchanting effect, placing it among the highlights of Hedberg’s contribution to the exhibition. This contemporary recognition underscores Månglitter’s significance within Hedberg’s oeuvre: it was celebrated as a tour-de-force of måleri(painterly skill) that eloquently captured a fleeting natural atmosphere. oil on canvas signed unframed 52 × 72.5 cm (20½ × 28½ in.) framed 68 × 88 cm (26¾ × 34¾ in.)  Exhibited: Konstnärshuset, joint exhibition of Erik Hedberg, Wilhelm Smith, and Pelle Swedlund, 1905, cat. no. 14: Månglitter. After Sunset by the Lake, 1889 by Swedish Artist Anton Genberg, 1889
Located in Stockholm, SE
Among the treasured classic arts we offer for sale is this stunning painting by the artist Anton Genberg. Born in 1862 to Pehr Jonsson and Anna Genberg, he left an indelible mark on the art world through his magnificent creations. Genberg's life was colored with a passion for exploration, study, and artistic expression. His artistic journey began with studies at the Tekniska skolan in Stockholm from 1882 to 1884, during which he also honed his skills at Oscar Törnås' private painting school. He furthered his education under the tutelage of Per Daniel Holm at the prestigious Konstakademien from 1884 to 1889. During these years, Genberg's exceptional talent was recognized with numerous scholarships and medals. Our painting, dated 1889, transports us to a captivating scene just some minutes after sunset. The canvas is imbued with a beautiful golden glow as the sun's last rays kiss the sky. Amidst a serene lake, the heavenly light reflects, painting the water's surface with mesmerizing shades of purple. In the distance, the landscape is dominated by a mountainous forest, while in the foreground, a stretch of land adorned with bushes creates a sense of depth. The impressionist style comes alive through Genberg's swift brushstrokes, reminiscent of the masterful techniques employed by Rembrandt, with branches delicately etched using the opposite end of the brush. Genberg's fame as a landscape artist was solidified through his enchanting depictions of snow-laden landscapes from Norrland, particularly the majestic "fjällen" (mountains). His art also captured the allure of Stockholm, Dalarna, and his birthplace in Jämtland. Notably, his masterpiece "Vinterafton" earned him a place of honor at the esteemed Nationalmuseum. Beyond his creative pursuits, Anton Genberg was actively involved in the art community. He served as the vice-chairman of the Svenska konstnärernas förening from 1913 to 1918 and held a position on the board of Sveriges allmänna konstförening from 1906 to 1939. His exceptional contributions were recognized when he was elected as a member of the Konstakademien in 1922. Throughout his life, Genberg resided in various places, leaving behind a trail of artistic inspiration. From 1916 to 1924, he lived in the enchanting Villa Wallbeck-Hansen, a masterpiece of national romanticism...

An Autumn Evening Study, 1901 (En höstkvällstudie, 1901)
By Fritz Lindström
Located in Stockholm, SE
This landscape painting by Swedish artist Fritz Lindström captures the tranquility of the Stockholm archipelago. "An Autumn Evening Study, 1901" is a stunning portrayal of a rural scene at dusk. The painting's delicate pink and purple sky envelops the landscape in a soft glow, hinting at the transition from day to night. In the middle ground, a farmer with his horse can be seen plowing a field, adding a narrative element to this peaceful scene. This work is one of several paintings Lindström created during this period, following his time in France and prior to joining the Rackstad group in 1903. BIOGRAPHY Fritz Lindström started his artistic journey as an apprentice in decorative painting under Carl Grabow, where he met fellow artist Björn Ahlgrensson. He later studied at the Artists' Association School in Stockholm with Richard Bergh (1892–1894 and 1895–1896) and at Valand Art School in Gothenburg under Carl Larsson (1894–1895). His studies continued in Copenhagen and Paris from 1897 to 1899. In 1900, Lindström returned to Sweden, drawn to Värmland by his friend and brother-in-law Björn Ahlgrensson. From 1903 onwards, he became part of the Rackstad group—a community of artists who saw the countryside as an ideal setting for artistic and spiritual work. This belief resonated with Lindström, and he remained dedicated to this lifestyle for over fifty years, living and working by Lake Racken. Lindström's early artistic focus was on the challenging art of human studies, which piqued his interest. Despite financial struggles and difficulty selling his paintings, he gained recognition mainly for his portraits, known for their well-constructed composition and deep psychological insight. Portrait painting became crucial for his financial stability. Interest in his landscape paintings grew when the director of the National Museum happened upon his landscapes during an exhibition opening...

"Moonlit River Scene", Early 20th Century Oil on Canvas by Luis Graner y Arrufi
By Luis Graner Y Arrufi
Located in Madrid, ES
LUIS GRANER Y ARRUFI Spanish, 1863 - 1929 MOONLIT RIVER SCENE signed and dated "L. Graner, 1925" (lower right) Oil on canvas 20-1/8 X 30 inches (51X 76 cm.) framed: 25-3/4 X 35-3/4 inches (65 X 90.5 cm.) PROVENANCE NEAL AUCTION COMPANY, New Orleans, LA, USA Private Collection, Barcelona Graner paints this work, Moonlit on the river, during his stay in the United States in the last stage of his artistic life, from 1910 to 1928, in full stage of maturity. This artwork reflects the constant search of the artist for the effects of light in his work. This persistent concern for light remains throughout his artistic life, which he learned in his Parisian stage under the influence of the painter Frances Platour. The silver light of the moon and the small lights at distance, which are tiny foci of artificial light, reflecting the river water, forming a chromatic range of greens, ocher and pearly that give a certain mystery to the composition, creating a modern approach to the landscape, by placing the two large trees at the edge of the river in the foreground Luís Graner y Arrufí, Spanish (1863–1929) was a Catalan painter in the Realistic style. He was born in Barcelona, and studied at the Escola de la Llotja from 1883, with Antoni Caba (color/composition) and Benet Mercadé (drawing). During his final year at school, he received a grant to study in Madrid, where he copied and learned from the Old Masters at the Museo del Prado. After that, supported by a fellowship, he moved to Paris and became a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts. Later, he returned to Barcelona, but continued to travel to cities throughout Europe, including Berlin, Munich and Düsseldorf. Influenced by Richard Wagner's concept of "Gesamtkunstwerk" (Total Work of Art), he was motivated to create his own total art experience and organized the "Sala Mercè" (Mercy Hall) in Barcelona's Rambla District. The project involved contributors from every artistic discipline, including the new field of cinematography. The room was decorated by Antoni Gaudí. Other participants included Adrià Gual, Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas...
