About

Edmund Coates (1816 - 1871) Saratoga Lake, 1855 Oil on canvas 21 x 25 5/8 inches (oval) Signed and dated lower center Provenance: Private Collection, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Godel & Co. Fine Art, New York Dr. Elliot Vessel, Hershey, Pennsylvania (acquired from the above in 1992) Sotheby's New York, All That Is Glorious Around Us Online, January 21, 2020, Lot 40 Exhibited: University Park, Pennsylvania, Palmer Museum of Art, The Pennsylvania State University, 1995. This luminist work was executed by Edmund Coates in 1855 after a famous William Henry Bartlett engraving from 1839-1840 in Saratoga Springs. This late summer / early fall sunset view is located near where the modern Route 9P crosses Fish Creek (next to the present marina), looking towards Saratoga Lake and Snake Hill. The area is still busy with boats and is home to a well-known regatta. In 1835, Bartlett first visited the United States to draw the buildings, towns and scenery of the northeastern states. The finely detailed steel engravings Bartlett produced were published uncolored with a text by Nathaniel Parker Willis as American Scenery; or Land, Lake, and River: Illustrations of Transatlantic Nature. American Scenery was published by George Virtue in London in 30 monthly installments from 1837 to 1839. Bound editions of the work were published from 1840 onward. A versatile nineteenth-century painter, Edmund C. Coates created landscapes, seascapes, portraits, and history paintings. Born in England, Coates spent his adult life in New York City, where he was a frequent exhibitor at the National Academy of Design. Working in the style of the Hudson River School, Coates produced beautiful, idealized images of the lakes and mountains of the Hudson River Valley and the White Mountains of New Hampshire, as well as romantic visions of ancient Italian ruins. He was closer in dates to the second generation of the Hudson River school, which included Frederic Edwin Church, John Frederick Kensett, Jasper Cropsey, Sanford Robinson Gifford, and Albert Bierstadt, and David Johnson. His work can be now seen in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Historical Society, the Addison Gallery of American Art, the Shelburne Museum, and the Yale University Art Gallery.
