About the Item

It’s very difficult to classify the style of this piece. I have categorised it as abstract because of the composition which is all about the effect of light creating strong shadows, although the particular subjects are cacti which are stylised, but nevertheless representational. If my work is about anything it’s a response to the subject matter which is generally the natural world. This is one of a series of pieces I made after a trip to Morocco. I’ve used a red ochre ground for this painting to give the impression of the sun baked earth. The walls of this cactus garden are also formed of the same. Great fun making these pieces – especially adding the prickles, but super-fiddly! There is a companion piece to this – even pricklier – ‘Cacti with Shadows’. Although not a diptych, these two pieces would make an excellent pair in a single room. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Cactus Madness, Musee de la Palmeraie, Morocco by Elaine Kazimierczuk [2020] Original Painting Signed by artist Size: H 95cm x W 95cm Sold Unframed Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: Elaine Kazimierczuk studied chemistry at university and taught for many years before becoming a professional artist. She has written and illustrated a series of books on local history besides a monograph on the religious works of the prominent sculptor Peter Eugene Ball, with whom she collaborated on many major commissions. She is a trustee of Midlands-based Ice-age Archaeological Insights and produces visual interpretations of prehistoric people and their environment. In addition to the demand for her landscapes, there is a growing clientele for her portraiture. She has been shortlisted for the 2016 BP National Portrait Award. Many of Elaine Kazimierczuk’s works are based on interpretations of intimately-known localities, frequently, but not exclusively, in her native Nottinghamshire. In her semi-abstract studies of meadows, trees and hedgerows, she achieves a tension between looseness and control, which enables her to convey that intricate assembly of wild beauty. Frequently working on a red ground, which resonates with the vibrant overpainting, she adopts a bold approach, so that there is an evident freedom, just short of capriciousness, either of hand or eye, in the brushwork. Her works represent the ordered chaos of the natural world with energy and vitality. Elaine Kazimierczuk has recently been awarded the Mary Moser Prize for 2018. This is an Oxfordshire Art Weeks prize awarded to a person who has changed career and taken up art professionally later in life.

Artist Comments
I have a succulent in a ceramic sugar skull pot in my kitchen and painted it from life. It has a wonderful expression on its face, and I enjoy the spikey succulent growing from the top like hair.

About the Artist
Kira Yustak paints fantastical scenes that come from her childhood memories, dreams, and the natural world. Each piece feels like part of a larger narrative of an alternative reality, rendered in a style she describes as comic realism. She feels art must trigger something inside the viewer’s soul.Kira currently lives in New Jersey and finds inspiration in the work of Lowbrow, Folk, and Surrealist artists.
