Élisée MacletVue de Nice
Oil on canvas, signed "Maclet" lower left. Working in the early 20th century, Elisée Maclet challenged many of the established, if not dogmatic, artistic definitions of his time to arrive at his own theory and style of primitive or ‘naive’ art. In “Portofino à Jouinuelle” Maclet utilizes flat, bright colors combined with twisted perspectives reminiscent of Cezanne. He concentrates on shapes rather than forms and outlines them with a dark line to negate any three dimensionality. As is clearly evident in the trees and water, Maclet mixes his color directly on the board. Portofino is a picturesque fishing village on the Riviera in northwestern Italy. It has a small port at the head of an inlet lined with brightly color-washed houses, and Maclet was very fond of this region. Most of Maclet’s paintings have a rich textural appeal gained through the extensive use of impasto which is evident in this painting. Maclet frequently uses his palette knife as well to create a more varied surface. The intense color, broken brushwork, and tactile qualities of this picture give it a great deal of movement and interest. As his style indicates, Maclet’s art dictates a more simplistic approach to painting, with a purity and innocence as if seen through the eyes of a child.
