Nothing could describe the work of Elke Schönberger more incorrectly than the term “photorealism”. Instead of trying to depict supposedly verifiable photographic truthfulness, the artist deliberately questions it. The utterly precise and lavishly painted pictures actually show a hyperreal image of a world which satirizes reality. The painted interventions range from small alienations in the form of false reflections to topographical continental displacements. The deceptive mantle of the alleged “photorealism” initially lets the observer cradle himself in a supposed certainty, before he is forced to unlearn the already known reception patterns.
Cycle Wiental
It is no coincidence that the starting point for this in many years created cycle is the artist’s next homeland as it is the environment with which she is most familiar. However, the “home” does not serve here as a projection surface for the secure and the rural, but on the contrary is usually the point of contact with the unreal and estranged. The works in the Wiental cycle are mostly deserted or show people only as mirror images, statues or evidently projected staffages. The city, but above all the river itself, as if with supernatural power create an impression of a fictitious urban landscape, where the power of the water opens up new shores and creates beaches. Paired with a highly demonic light, it becomes clear that this is not about homeland, but the departure for new shores, even if that happens only in the artist’s head.
It is high time that the eponymous river of this city finds an appropriate artistic representation. Historically, the Danube was never very likeable to the Viennese, which is why this river touches the city only marginally, nor is it an interesting monument to the city, but in return it is imprisoned in the center of the cliché industry. The river Wien, on the other hand, flows right through the city, but was mostly banished to the subsoil, from where it only reminds of its existence in a subtle way at high tide (subway failure and canal scents). From Schönbrunn via the Gürtel, under the Naschmarkt to the Stadtpark, the center of the city is situated at – or sometimes above – the river Wien. And it is time for the meandering fluid to rise and seek its freedom and justice – even if only in the cycle of Elke Schönberger.
The cycle Wiental goes far beyond classical city veduta and the modern urban landscape and shows a contemporary picture of the possibilities and impossibilities of this city.
