Elmer BergeFall Landscape
A large 1930s oil on canvas landscape painting by the Norwegian / American artist Elmer Berge. A pastoral fall colored wooded scene with a stream and brightly colored tree leaves as are typical in the late calendar months in Minnesota where the artist worked. Painting is on original back pine stretcher bars and has visible stretcher bar lines and some spidering and craquelure throughout, more visible on the verso back canvas side. The painted surfaces are stable, painting is signed lower left and unframed. Measures 25" X 34" Elmer Berge was born on Finnoy Island near Stavanger, Norway in 1892. As a young child he showed a strong interest in art and began studying it when we was eight years old. He emigrated to the United States around 1910 and settled in Chicago, Illinois. Berge attended the Art Institute of Chicago and lived in the area until 1918. From 1918-1922, Berge returned to Norway and studied under the English artist Matthew Williams Thompson. He traveled around Norway painting the fjords and varied Norwegian landscape. After his travels to Norway, Berge settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota and continued to paint. He won awards for his paintings that he exhibited at the Minnesota State Fair in 1932 and 1936. He painted with several well known Minnesota artists such as Cameron Booth and Frederic Calhoun. Berge was a member of the Minneapolis Institute of Art and Swedish Institute in Minneapolis. He died unexpectedly in 1956 after an art exhibition he had in Rochester, Minnesota.
