Félix ZIEM Beaune 1821 - Paris 1911 Moonlight, View of the Bay of Nice from Saint- Hélène Oil on panel Signed, dated and dedicated in pen lower right “Hommage à Madame Madinier Ziem 3 mai 95”. 24 x 27.5 cm panel 36 x 40 cm frame The son of a Burgundian woman and a Polish emigrant, Félix ZIEM grew up in Burgundy, where he studied architecture in Dijon. In 1839, a dispute with the management of Dijon's École des Beaux-Arts led him to leave the region to join his brother in Marseille. He then began a career as an architect, building the Roquefavour aqueduct to bring water to Marseille. A chance meeting with the Duc d'Orléans and the latter's interest in his work as a draughtsman led to a change of vocation, and he opened a drawing school on the Vieux-Port. His reputation was quickly established, and his pupils were numerous. In 1840, he discovered Martigues, where he returned to set up a studio in 1860. In 1841, he left Marseille for Italy. He stopped for a while in Nice, where wealthy Englishmen and Russians, who formed part of his clientele, were staying. In 1842, he discovered Italy for the first time, especially Venice, which became the main source of inspiration for his painting. From 1842 to 1847, he travelled throughout Italy and the South of France. In 1849, he settled in Paris, dividing his time between the capital and the forest of Fontainebleau, where he became a friend of Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet. He painted scenes of daily life, portraits and rural landscapes, which temporarily linked him to the Barbizon school. He exhibited for the first time at the 1849 Paris Salon, and became a relative regular. In 1859, he moved to the Montmartre district, before the wild boiling of the Paris School, and took up residence on rue de l'Empereur (now rue Lepic), but always kept a pied-à-terre in Barbizon. A recluse, he had little contact with other artists of his generation, trained no students and gave few lessons. From 1850 to 1880, he traveled throughout Europe, from England to the Netherlands, via the Orient (Constantinople, Algeria), but above all Venice, where he stayed at least twice a year. In 1860, he built a studio in Martigues, where the canals of the small fishing port, opening onto the Etang de Berre (Bouches-du-Rhône), inspired many of his paintings, some of which can be seen in the museum that the town has dedicated to him since 1908 (it's partly thanks to him that Martigues is nicknamed “The Venice of Provence”). In 1880, he set up another studio in Nice, in the Saint-Hélène district, where he now spent most of his time, especially in winter, when he was not in Paris. By November 1911, when he died, he was an admired and recognized painter, the only artist to have entered the Louvre during his lifetime through the Chauchard bequest. Our painting depicts an overhanging view of the Bay of Nice from the vicinity of Saint-Hélène, where the painter had settled by 1880. Thanks to a very subtle technique of fine glazed touches and the use of a blue-grey gradation, the painter succeeds in recreating the landscape's topography and its cold, nocturnal atmosphere with great economy of means. In the background, at the far end of the bay, we can make out a few glimmers of the city of Nice. Jules Valadon will obtain there several medals and will see his reputation embellished by his portraits and expression heads. We see in this mystical-looking landscape, a representation of a passage from the Gospel of saint John, during the resurrection of Christ, himself addressing Mary Magdalene. The saint is on her knees beside Christ and addresses him not believing in his presence among the living.
