'Sunday in the Park', oil on board (circa 1930s), by Francesco Di Marino. Spring is in the air on this Sunday in the park, most probably a scene from Naples, Italy, where the artist was born and lived. The weather is perfect, families are out strolling together and others are enjoying people watching at the park's outdoor café. This is the sort of quintessential impressionist scene for which Francesco Di Marino was so well known, and what a wonderful, uplifting piece for your home or workspace it is. In good vintage condition commensurate with age. The frame has marks and blemishes which simply add character to the piece. Signed: 'Di Marino' in the lower left hand corner. About the Artist: Francesco Di Marino (1892-1954), was an Italian painter of genre scenes (intimate depictions of everyday life), animated landscapes and coastal views. Di Marino faithfully followed the tradition of painting in the outdoors and particularly as established in Naples by the movement called the 'School of Posillipo'. Although he worked alongside his masters, he gradually refined his own personal style in which he expressed his feelings through his painting. He managed to capture on canvas the fleeting aspects of nature in his cityscapes and landscapes with a deft touch that most artists could not achieve. Di Marino was very aware of the limits of his creative possibilities in the sense that he was tempted by desire and curiosity to move to more forward styles of painting, however he chose in the end to continue in the style with which he felt most comfortable and secure. This desire for the familiar carried over into the scenes he chose to paint. He repeatedly painted impressionist scenes from old Naples such as markets, fun fairs, street scenes, puppeteers, groups of children playing in public gardens and outdoor musicians all invariably framed with picturesque backgrounds.
