Francis Wynne Thomas
Winter Landscape 1945 - British art snowy river landscape oil painting

1945

About the Item

This lovely winter landscape oil painting is by noted British artist Francis Wynne Thomas. It was painted in 1945 and the location is Celle in Lower Saxony, Germany. It would be interesting to know what Thomas was doing there is 1945, besides painting! The town of Celle is situated on the banks of the river Aller, a tributary of the Wesser so the river in this painting must be the Aller. The composition is a snowy river landscape looking through the branches of a snow covered tree in the foreground and along the river Aller to a small bridge. Either side and beyond the bridge are trees with a church tower behind. The palette is shades of blues and purples for the trees, river and snow with tones of orange for the sky and sun, reflected in the water. There is superb brushwork and heavy impasto and the colours are really vibrant and alive. A lovely atmospheric end of war painting and an excellent example of Thomas's work. Signed lower left and inscribed Celle, Germany 1945 on reverse of stretcher and to canvas return. Provenance. Sussex estate. Condition. Oil on canvas, 20 inches by 16 inches unframed, in good condition. Frame. Housed in a silvered period frame 25 inches by 21 inches and in good condition. Francis Wynne Thomas (1907-1989). Painter and art teacher born in Bromley, Kent. He was an architectural graduate from Cambridge University but went on to study art Heatherley's (1930-34) under Frederick Whiting. In 1949 he was on the staff at Haetherley's. His work can be heavily stylised. He showed at the RA, RP, UA, RSA, RCamA and elsewhere. He lived in London. Painted in England and Europe, mainly landscapes. Died 1989.
