20th Century French Oil Painting Sails Below the Hay Field

late 20th century

About the Item

Sails below the Hay Field French School, mid-late 20th century unsigned oil painting on canvas textured paper (reverse side is smooth, the painted side looks and feels as canvas), unframed overall 9 x 15 inches Distant white sails bob about on an azure sea, but the focus is on the golden hay field in the foreground where the artist was seated. A glorious image, completed by the windswept coastal trees, a common scene in the South of France. The colour of the sky leads us to believe a rather fresh breeze was blowing. This painting is from a small collection of work by the same hand, all on the same canvas-textured heavyweight paper. They were purchased by us in France and the scenes all seem to be be from the South of France and Provence. They very much feel as if they were painted "en plein air" as the artist has captured the scene with a very fresh breezy feel to the colours and texture. All are unsigned, are very good quality by an accomplished hand, bear good bright colour and are very clean. The ideal way to display would be to affix it to board and frame it. Condition report: Very clean, stored by the artist for some time we believe. The paint is applied thickly in places, giving a great depth of texture and movement. Small pinholes to the extreme four corners where the artist affixed it to a board loosely to paint the image.
