About the Item
Suzhou landscape is the main theme of Gao Xiao Yun’s landscape paintings. Water, light and times create a diverse scenario of Suzhou riverside towns. Gao features these three elements that form poetic and harmonic rhythm in his landscape paintings. A combination of Chinese ink concept with oil painting techniques is what valued the most by international collectors.
Gao Xiao Yun was born in Shaan Xi province in 1977, China and graduated from the Department of Oil Painting of the China Academy of Fine Art. He has held solo exhibitions in Shanghai and Taipei. He has also participated in the development of the Shanghai Pudong Artist Village and Puxi Art District.
Artwork of Gao Xiaoyun explores an ideal visual language for waterfront landscape in southeast China, touching upon its poetic, conceptual and naturalistic interpretations. Gao juxtaposes a contemporary approach with a traditional figurative style. By using a monochromatic color palette with a highlight of saturated tone, Gao creates a spontaneous and drifting, yet sophisticated atmosphere on canvas.
Gao Xiaoyun’s work often displays a landscape suspended between the real and the ideal dimensions. External sights and inner visions are filled with intimacy and meditative tones, emphasized by strong layers and rhythmic brush strokes, reaching the harmonious co-existence of not only man and nature, but also physical entities and states of mind.

Gao Xiao Yun
Suzhou landscape consists of several rivers and lakes. When mist rises from water, landscape is hidden behind a misty screen. Time and light have been forgotten for a while in a mass of fog. The water and sky in Gao Xiao Yun’s paintings are the main elements, which control the whole composition, shaping the boundaries of each structure with their purity and fluidity. Even on its intense textures, we may see signs of drippings in motion; even on his fading shadows we will find shimmering essence of the water. Somehow, it seems like these houses are floating on the “Lethe River”, where no past and no future exist and all belongs to the present. 苏州风景由河与湖组成，当水生成雾，沿岸风景被一层雾幕所遮蔽，时间与光线暂时被遗忘在一团迷雾之中。水与天空是高小云创作的主要元素，纯净与流动的水与天空相互交织组成画面每一部分的结构。即使水的波纹和周围船只与屋舍的阴影让画面充满着强烈的律动，然而在水与空气的衬托下，仿佛所有的屋子都飘浮在“遗忘之河”上，没有过去，没有未来，只存在于当下。 Gao Xiaoyun was born in Shaan Xi province in 1977, China and graduated from the Department of Oil Painting of the China Academy of Fine Art.
