Sheila McNab MacMillan
Sunflowers of Provence, Abstract Expression 20th C/early 21st C Scottish

late 20th century

About the Item

Abstract expression of the Sunflowers in Provence sets the traditional fields ablaze with orange. Painted by Scottish artist Sheila McNab MacMillan, who is known for bold outlines of hills and jaunty houses on cliffs in an abstract/modern style. This one is large with bright striking color, set within neutrals, whites and teal blues. Her brushstrokes are confident, broad and visible. A white outline near the top may be a town, with slashes of color noting fields and flowers. The painting cascades down one side with perhaps a waterfall? But the main hill under the blaze of flowers turns white, like snow with bare trees. Endlessly fascinating and interpretive, with thick black outlines and shade upon shade of orange and then falling to white. Signed McMillan lower left. This painting is in excellent condition presented in a contemporary silver wooden frame and glass. Size is about 32" high by 35" wide with the frame. Ready to hang and enjoy!

Village Scene
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Fine 19th century oil painting of a bustling Austrian/Germanic village with horse, rider and various figures outside an Inn, attributed to Arthur Georg Ramberg (1819-1879), well known for figurative genre paintings. The rider is carrying a bugle, apparently announcing news to the people; men are sitting by the table drinking, one with a raised stein. Women walking by stop to listen, a man carrying a sack has stopped to watch the rider, people are in the Inn doorway, and one is looking out the window. Children pause their playing. The scene is under a large tree beside the Inn; a whole community waiting for news. There is a great deal of detail in the scene, tree and Inn house...

The Trossachs, Scotland
By Alfred de Breanski Jnr.
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Landscape painting of The Trossachs, Scottish Highlands, 20th century is after renowned landscape artist Alfred De Breanski, Jnr, (1877-1955). As in this painting, De Breanski established a reputation for his distinctive vivid greens and color in impressionistic style within realism of his subject. This mountain scene with lake and watering cattle demonstrates the oeuvre of this artist, and also his father Alfred de Breanski Sr. This is a particularly beautiful landscape painting of Scotland, in a favorite natural region by Perthshire. 'The Trossachs' shows fine brushstrokes in the clouds, and area of raised paint over the ground. Light is captured on misty hillsides, and reflected in the water. De Breanski studied at St Martins School of Art, England, but had the benefit of his father, his mother and his Uncle who were all successful artists of their time, and their work continues to be highly sought after for the detail and light captured in plein art...
