About the Item

Gastone Lanfredini: Naïve Tuscan Painter - Mathematician. Painting signed and dated 1966. Inscription "Intervento nr. 1 bis" on the reverse of painting. Technique: oil on canvas. In good condition. Lanfredini signs and dates the work on the front (september 1966) , while on the back there is an old inscription with the title of the painting: Intervento nr. 1. Gastone Lanfredini (Florence, 1923 - Sansepolcro, 2005) is a Tuscan artist known for his naïve painting style, characterized by bright colors and stylized geometric figures that evoke a simple and enchanted world. The scene depicts stylized characters in a fantastic world, a kaleidoscope of geometric shapes and segments that come together in the modern version of a stained glass window. The primary colors recall the paintings (and also the stained glass!) of Ferdinand Léger. The combination of lines, colors, and shapes composes a rhythm, a sequence, a mathematical design, and at the same time a naïve and spontaneous vision of a child. This enchanted landscape is populated by men and women, flowers, plants, and unites people of different ages through the playful and poetic eye of the artist. A mathematician turned artist, as well as a very original artist, Lanfredini transitioned from figurative to abstract art in the early sixties, schematizing form and enhancing color. His Concrete Painting creates a new reality in which harmony, proportions, and color compositions remain faithful to the forms of nature, despite the stylistic change. In love with nature and the countryside, Lanfredini settled in Sansepolcro, where he spent much of his life and artistic career. In 2023, an exhibition dedicated to the artist and the evolution of Gastone Lanfredini's art was organized: "From the Sensible to the Essence" - One Hundred Years Since His Birth 1923 - 2023, held at Palazzo Alberti in Sansepolcro (AR). The exhibition paid homage to an artist who captured the essence of nature and Tuscan rural life through his unique and poetic style.
