George Boyle
French impressionist landscape, Barbizon forest, with river and cows at Sunset

circa 1890

About the Item

French impressionist landscape, Barbizon forest, with river and cows at Sunset Boyle was a pioneering 19th-century British artist inspired by European Impressionist painters. The influence of the French Barbizon school is very evident in his work. This is a rare example of the artist's work as he mostly painted small-scale English landscapes. He often rejected the studio environment to paint ‘En Plein Air’ creating his characteristic atmospheric impressionist studies of the British landscape. This is an oil on panel. It has been framed in an outstanding Vintage French Style giltwood frame. He is recorded as living in London and had other works exhibited at: Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Society of Oil Painters. The French Barbizon painters were a group of artists who worked in the village of Barbizon and the surrounding Fontainebleau Forest in the mid-19th century. They played a crucial role in the development of landscape painting and had a significant influence on the emergence of the Impressionist movement. The style of the Barbizon painters can be characterized by the following elements: Naturalism: The Barbizon painters sought to depict nature as faithfully as possible. They moved away from the idealized and formal landscapes of the academic tradition and instead focused on direct observation and plein air painting, capturing the effects of light, atmosphere, and natural details. Realistic portrayal of rural life: The Barbizon painters often included figures, particularly peasants and shepherds, in their landscapes. They depicted these rural scenes with a sense of dignity and respect, highlighting the simplicity and harmony of rural life. Emphasis on tonal values: The Barbizon painters employed a tonal approach to their paintings, using a limited palette and focusing on variations of light and dark values. They achieved a sense of depth and atmosphere by carefully observing the play of light and shadow in nature. Subdued color palette: Compared to the vibrant and saturated colors of later Impressionism, the Barbizon painters favored a more muted and earthy color palette. They used shades of greens, browns, grays, and blues to convey the natural tones of the landscape. Emotion and mood: The Barbizon painters aimed to evoke a sense of tranquility, nostalgia, and poetic atmosphere in their works. They sought to capture the emotional and spiritual qualities of nature, often infusing their landscapes with a sense of quiet contemplation or melancholy.
