George Grosvenor Thomas
River Landscape - Scottish Glasgow Boys 1900 Impressionist art oil painting

Circa 1900

About the Item

A superb Scottish landscape oil painting by Glasgow Boy artist George Grosvenor Thomas. Painted circa 1900 the composition is a river landscape, the river running through fields with a dwelling nestling in the trees, its lights reflecting in the water. Thomas was a member of the Glasgow Boys, having settled in Scotland from Australia in 1886 aged 30 and became a respected Scottish Impressionist. He was influenced by Corot and Daubigny and indeed their influences can be seen in this work. A lovely signed Scottish landscape oil painting by a well sought after artist. Signed lower left. Provenance. Private purchase. Condition. Oil on canvas, 24 inches by 16 inches unframed and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a fine reeded Whistlerian frame, 32 inches by 24 inches framed and in good condition. George Grosvenor Thomas (1856 - 1923) was an Australian-born Impressionist painter of Scottish ancestry; known primarily for landscapes and still-lifes. Thomas was born in Sydney. In 1885, possibly because he thought he would find more opportunities in Europe, he left Australia for the United Kingdom and settled in Glasgow, around 1886. There, due to a long-standing interest in art, he became acquainted with several members of the Glasgow Boys, an artists' group that was influenced by the Barbizon School and credited with introducing Post-Impressionism to Scotland. This inspired him to become a serious artist. Despite his association with the group, he appears to have been largely self-taught. He focused on rural landscapes, although he also created genre works and urban scenes, and he was equally at home in watercolors or oils. Much of his work shows the influence of Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny. He exhibited his works at the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, which elected him a member in 1892. In addition, he held showings on the Continent, notably in Munich and Dresden, where he was awarded a gold medal. He eventually moved to London, which served as a base for his extensive travelling, but maintained his contacts with the Glasgow Boys. He died there in 1923.

Jules Van Biesbroeck was the son of Jules Evariste van Biesbroeck, a painter of Ghent, but was born in Italy, in Portici, near Naples, while his parents were staying there. (In the 19th century many artists made educational trips to Italy). It was a long visit: the child was two years old by the time the family returned to Ghent.[1] After a short period of practice with his father, van Biesbroeck was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His first painting, "The Shepherd" (French: Le pâtre), was sold at the Triennale in Ghent. In 1888, when he was only 15 years old, he made his debut at the "Salon des Champs-Elysées" in Paris with his monumental work "The Launch of the Argo" (French: Le lancement...

In this prototypical oil painting, Walter Launt Palmer's title as "the painter of the American winter" can be vividly and brilliantly seen. As an impressionist painter that emerged at the turn of the 20th century, Palmer took great interest in the picturesque American landscape, though he particularly focused on the rendering of this landscape glistening with snow. His pictures evoke an unreplicable natural serenity, and in this oil painting "The Winter Scene...
