George Tzannes
Ancient Rock Wall with Stone-filled Window - Figurative Painting of Greek Wall

1987

About the Item

This painting measures 13.5"x 11.3". It is a poetic representation of a stone wall in the Greek island of Kythira. George Tzannes is an American painter of Greek origins. In his twenties he visited Kythira, the Greek island of his father's birth. Since that time, the island has become the major reference of his creativity. The focus of this artwork is a subject very dear to Tzannes: the timeless, spiritual quality of the island's landscape, where nature and ancient monument's ruins mix in an endless circle of life. The wheat stems so full of life dramatically contrasts with the stone-filled window creating a tangible effect of life prevailing over decadence. The gentle blue light pervading everything creates the sensation of an intense blue sky that is not seen but only perceived. The visual experience slowly becomes almost physical as if the viewer viewer could step into the painting and hear the cicadas singing under the summer sun.
