About the Item
Large oil painting of an Orientalist landscape by Prosper Marilhat
French, 19th Century
Canvas: Height 34cm, width 63cm
Frame: Height 52cm, width 81cm
This superb landscape is by the French Orientalist painter Prosper Marilhat (1811-1847). Renowned for his Orientalist landscapes like this work in the Mayfair Gallery collection, Marilhat took inspiration from Egypt, which he visited in the early 1830s. His works can be found in several notable museums across the UK, including The Wallace Collection. His signature – ‘P. MARILHAT’ – can be found in the lower right corner.
The painting is set within a tranquil Orientalist landscape, which is punctuated by towering palm trees and groups of figures in the right-hand corner. The figures ride or lead several camels, seeming to be coming to rest underneath the trees. The rest of the landscape is dominated by mountains and crags, populated by small temples. Particularly fine inclusions are the crescent moon, which signals the oncoming night, and the pair of birds that stand out against the blue sky.
Marilhat’s use of colour in this painting is highly impressive. Whilst the land is bathed in warm evening light, the impending arrival of the night is indicated by the graduation of the sky, which ascends from dusky pinks and purples to a deep blue at the top of the canvas. The landscape is rendered in a painterly, almost sketched style, that foreshadows the oncoming Impressionist movement.
Enclosed in a carved giltwood frame, the canvas sports a ‘Durand-Ruel, Paris’ stamp on the reverse. The stamp suggests that the work was sold through the renowned Durand-Ruel dealership, that went on to be taken over by the Impressionist dealer Paul Durand-Ruel.
With its stunning use of light and thoughtful details, this beautiful painting would be sure to light up any interior.
