About the Item
"Snowy Landscape, Italian Alps Village, 1944"
Giuseppe Sobrile (Italy 1879-1956)
Oil on board
Signed lower right and dated "1944" in Roman numerals
Dedication on back to Lina Sobrile Daffonchio (the painter's wife)
27 3/4 x 21 1/4 (37 x 31 1/2 frame) inches.
A stunning and thoroughly Modernist expression of a village in the Italian Alps covered in snow. The bright palette is enhanced by the somewhat deconstructed village buildings into geometrical form which are reminiscent of structures by Cezanne as he painted them in environs of Mont Sainte-Victoire. The brushwork is loose and highly expressive. This is a stunning painting.
Giuseppe Sobrile was an Italian painter. He studied at the Albertina Academy in Turin under the guidance of Pier Celestino Gilardi and Giacomo Grosso. He approached the taste of Felice Carena, Cesare Ferro and Domenico Buratti, with whom he shared an interest in detailed design and decorativism. After the First World War he became interested in the representation of alpine landscapes and rustic views, but also in the depiction of still lifes with wildflowers, inserted in large compositions of colorful bouquets. In 1992 his last retrospective was held at the Mole Antonelliana in Turin.
The Municipality of Turin, established a painting prize called "Giuseppe Sobrile Painting Prize" reserved for figurative artists, in order to honor the memory of the deceased painter.
The award will be on an yearly basis with a special Judging Commission, chosen annually, to determine the qualifications and prize distribution.
