Inscribed lower right, "Carl Sorensen" for Carl Frederick Sorensen (Danish, 1818-1879) and dated 1863. In 1848, Sorensen was commissioned by the Danish Government as the official naval artist to accompany the Royal Danish Navy on an official tour of the Mediterranean and to make a series of studies of the trip. The inspiration that Sorensen derived from this expedition led him to return to Capri every summer for the remainder of his life and also inaugurated his career as Denmark’s preeminent marine painter.
