About the Item
This paintings depicts Dingle, in County Kerry, Ireland. Dingle is the only town on the Dingle Peninsula, it sits on the Atlantic coast, about 50 kilometres (30 mi) southwest of Tralee and 71 kilometres (40 mi) northwest of Killarney.
Grégoire Mathias had developed a strong connection with Celtic culture when he lived in Brittany from 1997 to 2005. These influences were awoken again in his work in 2022 when his daughter’s move to Dublin gave him multiple opportunities to visit and paint Ireland. For the artist, the fast changing light associated with the Irish weather has been an endless source of inspiration for his continuous exploration of Diachronic Cubism, and Ireland in his eyes symbolises the union of Earth and Sky.
This painting was recently showcased in Dublin, alongside other landscapes, muses of the Arts and Portraits of James Joyce, during the artist's first exhibition in Ireland. Some of his works is since exhibited in the well known Gorry Gallery, Dublin, and his James Joyce Portrait aux Horloges is in the private collection of the James Joyce Museum, also in Dublin.

About the Artist:
Grégoire Mathias, a graduate of the National School of Fine Arts in Paris (ENSBA - École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts), is exhibiting his work at Sotheby's gallery in Périgueux, as well as in numerous galleries across Paris, New York, and Dublin.
Mathias is the creator of diachronic cubism, an unexplored branch of cubism that depicts landscapes, interiors, everyday life scenes, and, most notably, the concept of time itself. This unique style is characterized by the deconstruction of subjects and light over specific periods of time.
Since 2020, he has been designing UN posters through the World Federation for the United Nations Associations (WFUNA), becoming the first French artist to contribute to the organization after Picasso, Chagall, Miró, and Vasarely.

Greg Mathias, born on January 22, 1967, in Périgueux, Dordogne, was steeped in an artistic atmosphere from a young age. His father, a pioneering antiquarian bookseller, introduced vintage posters to the American market, and his mother was a bookbinder, instilling in Mathias a deep appreciation for art and literature. This rich environment laid the foundation for his creative journey. Early in his education, Mathias attended workshops with renowned artists Bertrand Piéchaud in Bordeaux and Jean Pierre Métout in Limoges. In 1985, he moved to Paris and became a guest student at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA), studying under Claude Augereau. By 1986, he had officially enrolled at ENSBA and joined Augereau’s workshop, which was influenced by the cubist master Jean Metzinger. Mathias’ artistic trajectory took a significant turn in 1987 when he participated in a sculpture internship with Claude Bogratchew, contributing to the "Totem AXA" sculpture. This period marked the beginning of a lasting professional relationship with Bogratchew. Following the death of Claude Augereau in 1988, Mathias continued his studies under Pierre Buraglio. His first major exhibition in 1989 at the Galerie de la Maison des Beaux-Arts displayed abstract paintings inspired by Willem de Kooning, though it was initially met with indifference. Despite early challenges, Mathias received commendation for his diploma in 1990, which led to a prestigious exhibition at the ENSBA premises. Later that year, he received a commission from Jack Rennert to paint a large fresco in New York, which further fueled his artistic evolution. During his time in Manhattan, he developed "diachronic cubism," a unique style capturing subjects from various temporal perspectives in a single artwork. Mathias’ career gained momentum in the 1990s. He exhibited extensively in France and the United States, with significant retrospectives and commissions. His diachronic cubism style matured, characterized by its focus on representing the passage of time within a single piece. Notable works included murals for hotels and restaurants in Bordeaux and exhibitions in prominent galleries. In 2001, Mathias served as an expert in posters for Tajan, a leading French auction house, before returning fully to his art practice in 2005. His partnership with the Morateur Gallery in Los Angeles played a pivotal role in establishing his international presence. By 2011, Mathias had created several murals for various establishments, and in 2018, he showcased his creative process in an exhibition titled "L'atelier Grégoire Mathias" at the Castelet d'Excideuil. In 2020, Mathias was commissioned by the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) to create a poster for United Nations Day, solidifying his role as the official artist for WFUNA. Most recently, Mathias’ exploration of diachronic cubism led him to Ireland, where he exhibited his work in Dublin this year. His connection to Ireland deepened through his homage to James Joyce, culminating in the donation of his Joyce's "Portrait aux Horloges" to the James Joyce Museum. Today, Mathias' work is exhibited in several galleries in France, New York and Dublin.

John Woodsum Hatch
1919-1998
During his fifty-year career as an artist, John Woodsum Hatch explored the people, the landscape, and the seascape around him. From his extensive travels to his years in New Hampshire, he developed a body of work that captures a sense of place. Through watercolor, ink and sand, he depicted the grandeur of the White Mountains. The crisp light and distinct topography of the Isles of Shoals and Great Bay Estuary are precisely and clearly documented in acrylic and tempera paintings. His ability to convey the sheer scale and longevity of the mountains and sea, and by comparison the fleeting nature of human life, conveys in a not-so-subtle way that the natural environment is to be revered and preserved.
Hatch took his first teaching job at the University of New Hampshire in 1949, the same year he graduated from Yale University. He never left. A former student, Sam Cady, described his contributions: “He was a wonderful mix of jokester and sage. A teacher who obviously loved people, loved teaching, and had a great gift for it.” After retiring in 1985, he was made an honorary Professor Emeritus at UNH.
Hatch contributed to New Hampshire's cultural life in three areas: his teaching, his art, and his community service. His effectiveness in these three areas can be traced his commitment to give something of himself to help others. Many artists teach by necessity and resent it as a drain on their creative energies but Hatch found his greatest fulfillment from a combination of teaching, making art, and being deeply involved with his community as an art historian and as an environmentalist.
Hatch’s work can be seen in numerous public collections, including: the Addison Gallery of American Art; DeCordova Museum; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; State of New Hampshire's Living Treasures Collection, and the Portland Museum of Art in Maine. John Woodsum Hatch, New Hampshire's 1997 Living Treasure Award recipient, died on August 6, 1998, at the age of 78.
Hatch was a draftsman, an artist and a muralist. His works can be found in public and private collections throughout the region. He exhibited at the New Hampshire Art...
