H JohnsonMoonlight Saddle River New Jersey Oil on Canvas Nocturne, dated 19541954
1954
About the Item
This is an evocative and moody nocturne painting of the Saddle River in New Jersey. Although it may seem dark, with the right light, it comes to life, surely as the artist intended. The main photo shows the painting with light directed at it and the second image shows it in normal room light without directed light.
Titled in the back “Moonlight Saddle River” the painting is signed H Johnson and dated 1954 in the lower right. It is unframed at the current time as the frame that it was housed in was wide and very heavy for shipping. The painting and its frame made a real statement, hanging over a fireplace in a federal period house.
The work is extremely well done and truly captures a moonlight view of the Saddle River landscape. The lighting affect with the moon shining through passing clouds is very convincing. Additionally, the outlines of the trees and general landscape adds drama and interest to the effectively lit composition.
The painting is oil on canvas and measures 25” x 30”. It is in very good condition - cleaned and varnished, with no damage or issues to report. You will be able to frame this work as you please. Shipping will be far less than had it retained its frame.

This is an unsigned, but rare, late 19th century oil on canvas of a view of the French Broad River in North Carolina. It is amongst the world’s oldest rivers.
