About the Item

Harry Pennell ARCA Picture Size: 24 x 40" (61 x 102cm) Outside Frame Size 31 x 47" (79 x 120cm) Signed oil painting on canvas Exhibition Period 1900 – 1930 Harry Pennell (1879-1934) was a British artist and illustrator who was best known for his watercolour landscapes of the English countryside. He was a member of the Royal Watercolour Society and exhibited his works at the Royal Academy. Born in Birmingham in 1879, Pennell studied art at the Birmingham School of Art before moving to London in 1904 to continue his studies at the Royal College of Art. After completing his studies, he worked as an illustrator for various publications, including The Illustrated London News, The Graphic, and The Strand Magazine. Pennell's early works were influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and the Pre-Raphaelites, and he often painted romantic landscapes with a strong sense of atmosphere and mood. He later developed a looser, more impressionistic style, which he used to capture the changing light and colours of the English countryside. Pennell's landscapes were often painted en plein air, or outdoors, and he was known for his ability to capture the essence of a place in his paintings. He painted scenes from all over England, including the Lake District, the Cotswolds, and the south coast. In addition to his landscape paintings, Pennell was also an accomplished illustrator, and he illustrated several books, including a collection of English folk songs and a volume of Shakespeare's sonnets. Pennell's career was cut short by his untimely death in 1934 at the age of 55. His legacy as a landscape painter and illustrator lives on, and his works continue to be admired for their beauty and evocative power.
