About the Item

Large French impressionist landscape - Sunrise above a river in the countryside This fine and impressive painting is a beautiful example of French paintings at the end of the 19th century. It beautifully blends influences of both romanticism and impressionism. The peaceful scenery depicts a farmer and his wife crossing a river with their cows and dog on a little boat, while the sun is rising and bursting trough the white clouds, colouring the picture with hues of pink and yellow. The oil on canvas measures ca. 60*81cms and with the frame the total dimensions are ca. 82 by 104 cms (32 1/4 inches by 41 inches). Henri Foreau (1866-1938) was born on February 19, 1866 in Paris. In 1876, he entered the Lycée Fontanes, the current Lycée Condorcet, which was then the breeding ground for future men of letters and artists from the bourgeoisie of the end of the 19th century. After brilliant studies, he entered the Académie Julian where he was a disciple of Jules Lefèbvre and Tony Robert-Fleury. There he rubbed shoulders with the Nemourian landscape painter Ernest Marché, to whom he gave two paintings currently kept at the Château-Musée de Nemours. In 1888 he was admitted to the Beaux-Arts presented by Gustave Boulanger and had as teachers Jules Lefebvre, Luc-Olivier Merson and especially Henri Harpignies who would become his wedding witness on April 7, 1897 at the town hall of the 16th arrondissement and with whom he frequently worked, the men shared a life-long friendship until his death. He barely missed the Prix de Rome but he won the First Prize for Landscape Jauvin d'Attainville. The National School of Fine Arts has two sketches by Foreau in its collection: La visitation (November 1889) and Le corps de Virginie exposed in front of the gallery (January 1890). This is a medal in 1892 with a work retained by the State, The Pain of Orpheus. He exhibited at the Salon of French Artists in 1888. He quickly received all the honors and very soon became a member of the jury and then a member of the committee. His rise within this official artistic milieu is very rapid. He would become president of "Les paysagistes Français", the French landscapers. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1911. He was a firm fixture in the literary and artistic life of the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, and he forged many friendships in this teeming environment of the time with: Théodore Botrel, Jacques Crepet, a specialist in Charles Baudelaire, the circle of Juliette Adam, Joseph and Jean-Baptiste Noulens, Louis Hourticq, Jules Clarétie, Emile Garçon, father of Maurice Garçon, André Devambez and among the painters: Léon Félix, Antonio de la Gandara, Eugène Béjot, Edgar Maxence, Jules Adler, Victor Charreton , Etienne Moreau-Nélaton. In 1903 his son, Claude Foreau, was born, who would also become a painter. Foreau traveled extensively across France capturing new landscapes and across Italy and Northern Europe as well as Egypt and Greece. He exhibited at the Obach gallery in London in 1908 for a personal exhibition (56 works), in 1909 in the United States in Seattle, then in 1910 in Buenos Aires in Argentina. He exhibited at the Hector Brame gallery in 1924, at the Graat gallery, frequently at the Cercle Volney, at the Georges Petit gallery from 1914 and until 1928. It was there that he had his first private exhibition in 1922 with 85 works. He appeared in exhibitions in Brazil in 1914, in Barcelona in 1917 and in San Francisco in 1915. He participated in the "Pantheon of War", in Kansas City, in memory of the 1914-1918 war where the great names of the time for the construction of this immense and common work which was exhibited on rue de l'Université. The Galerie de la Scala, rue de la Boétie in Paris, subsequently devoted a special exhibition to him in November 1992. The Musée d'Orsay, the Cabinet des Dessins du Louvre and the Musée Carnavalet all have works by him in their collections. Our painting likely dates from the late 19th / early 20th century
