About the Item

"After the Storm" is the title of this oil painting on canvas by the Swedish artist Hjalmar Berghcrantz (1889–1961). Signed and dated 1917. The artwork depicts a rugged landscape where the blue sky begins to emerge through lingering storm clouds. The sky, occupying a significant portion of the composition, enhances the dramatic effect with its large, thunderous formations. On the reverse side of the painting, an inscription reveals the title of the scene and notes that in 1932, it was awarded as a prize—likely in an art lottery, a common practice in the early 20th century. Not much is known of Hjalmar Berghcrantz but he was born in 1889 and pursued a career in painting, developing a style that combined realism with a sense of emotional intensity and became known primarily for his landscapes, particularly coastal and archipelago scenes. His work is distinguished by an atmospheric depth and an expressive use of light and color, often capturing the untamed beauty of nature. His best works is from the early years of his artistic career around 1910-1920. In our painting, After the Storm (1917), he showcases his ability to convey the dramatic interplay of weather and light.
