About the Item

Mid Century Mountain Stream Modernist Landscape by Honora Berg This mid century modernist landscape painting by Honora Berg (American, 1897-1985) depicts a vibrant mountain stream, rendered in Berg's signature expressive style. Large, multicolored boulders emerge from the flowing water, their angular forms contrasting with the rippling currents that swirl around them. The scene is framed by dense forest, with tree trunks and foliage rendered in rhythmic, textured brushstrokes. Berg uses a rich palette of greens, ochres, and earthy reds, applied with layered, gestural strokes that evoke the movement of water and the vitality of the landscape. This work reflects Berg’s interest in abstracting natural forms through color modulation and surface texture, rather than strict representational accuracy. The result is a landscape that feels alive and dynamic, inviting the viewer to experience the environment emotionally as much as visually. Medium: Gouache on archival paper Artist: Honora Berg Signed: "H. Berg" lower right corner Unframed. Size: 15.50"H x 20.50"W. Provenance: Larry Miller (1958-2003) was a specialist in bay area abstract artists and purchased numerous bay area artists estates. He purchased the entirety of the Honora Berg Estate from Carson Galleries and we purchased many of those works directly from Larry. Honora Berg an Abstract Expressionist and Bay Area Figurative School artist studied at the San Francisco Art Institute with David Park, Elmer Bischoff, and James Budd Dixon. Early Modernist River Landscape with Trees and Mountains WPA artist
By Maurice Kish
Located in Surfside, FL
In artist's hand painted frame. signed and dated. Genre: Modern Subject: Landscape Medium: Oil Surface: Canvas Country: United States Dimensions w/Frame: 23" x 30.25" The imagery of Maurice Kish (1895-1987), whether factories or carousels, reliably subverts expectations. His vision hovers just around the unraveling edge of things, where what is solid and clear becomes ambiguous. He is fascinated, often delighted, by the falling apart. This unexpected, fresh perspective results in oddly affecting pictures of a now long-gone New York. Born Moishe in a town called Dvinsk, Russia (what is now Daugavpils, Latvia), Kish came with his family to New York when he was in his teens. The family settled in Brownsville, and for the rest of Kish’s life Brooklyn remained his home, though he moved from one neighborhood to another. He was close to his parents, who recognized his talent and supported his desire to become an artist. Kish attended the National Academy of Design as well as Cooper Union. His fellow students included many other immigrants and children of immigrants who were particularly receptive to the Modernism coming from Europe. As his career progressed, Kish himself applied different strains of Modernism to different purposes. For him, the story was held above all else. For years, Kish used the skills he acquired in art school to earn his living at a Manhattan glass...
