About the Item
Netherlands, 1813-1902
Johannes was born in Groningen as the son of the stage actor Jacobus Johannes Marianus Hilverdink (1783-1828) and Anna Maria Corver. His mother was a granddaughter of the then famous actor and theater innovator Marten Corver. His aunt Geertruida Jacoba Hilverdink was also a well-known stage actress.
The family moved to Amsterdam when Johannes was still young. There he went to the drawing academy.
Hilverdink painted romantic landscapes and seascapes, mostly watercolours, pastels and lithographs.
Johannes Hilverdink was married to Martha Catharina Peduzzi and is the father of Eduard Alexander Hilverdink, whom he also taught.
In the Amsterdam district of Overtoomse Veld, a street is named after him, the Johannes Hilverdinkstraat.
