About the Item
Netherlands, 1852 – 1918
Pieter Cornelis Dommersen was born in Utrecht.
From 1852 he lived and worked in Amsterdam, where his mother died in 1861.
The painter specialized in painting sea and river views, harbor views,
shipwrecks and beach impressions. His source of inspiration were the seascapes of Hermanus Koekkoek Sr.
After the death of his mother he went to England, where he painted typical Dutch scenes for the English market. In England he had exhibitions at 'The Royal Academy', 'The Royal Society of British Artist', 'The Suffolk Street Galleries' and 'The British Institution'.
Many museums in the Netherlands have work by the painter in their collection;
His work can also be found in museums in Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht, but also in various British museums.
And many private collectors have work by this painter all over the world.
He signed his paintings as;
PC Dommersen, PC Dommershuijzen and PC Dommelshuizen.
He probably died in 1918 in Hexham, England.
