ntique landscape oil painting in it's original frame by French artist Gustave Césaire Garaud (1844-1914) An attractive Barbizon School oil painting on stretched canvas. A river scene with a wooded foreground with plenty of animated detail of the river and the small wooden bridge that crosses it. The artist has animated the painting with raised brush strokes and lush hues of greens and lilacs. The canvas is slightly textured. It is signed in the lower right with an annotation, A. F Aberle, my friend since childhood. MORE ABOUT THIS PAINTING: Medium: Oil on stretched canvas Overall size: 13.5ins x 18ins or 34cms x 46cms (approx) including the frame Date: 1880's Condition: The painting is in good antique condition but you should expect imperfections associated with age, in particular, there are two very small areas of missing paint in the tree. The frame has had renovations throughout but it is in a sturdy condition. Signed: Gustave Césaire Garaud (1844-1914) He was a student of François-Louis Français. His first exhibit at the Salon came in 1878, and he would continue to have showings there until his death. In 1881, two of his works, "Bord du Gapeau près de Montrieux" and "Les Pins de Notre-Dame sous Fenouillet", received honorable mention and were purchased by the Musée d'Art de Toulon. In 1889, he was awarded two third-class medals and, in 1893, two second-class medals. He opened a workshop in Paris, dividing his time between painting there, in Provence and in Brittany. He also created some landscapes in Corsica. Although he never became famous, he enjoyed a good reputation among collectors and was able to organize two exhibits of his own, at the Cercle Volney, in 1891 and 1900. In addition to his canvases, he decorated some private buildings. During this time, he travelled widely; especially to what was then French Indochina. Charles Francis De Klyn was born in Westchester County, New York, in 1865. A landscape, marine, portrait and figure painter, De Klyn studied in New York and Paris from 1886 to 1891, then taught at the Cleveland Art Club and the Cleveland School of Art. In 1893, he was one of the founders of the Cleveland Brush and Palette Club, and he exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1894 and 1895. "Landscape with White Birch," is a pastoral New England Landscape painted in the Barbizon style by historic woman artist Agnes Bartlett Brown (American, 1847-1932). Painted in oil on board the painting measures 13.63 x 10.25 inches, and is signed on the verso. The work is framed in an elegant, period appropriate frame and is ready to hang. Agnes Brown and her husband, the landscape painter John Appleton Brown (1844-1902), made a formidable artistic pair. The two traveled and painted together constantly, beginning in 1874 with an extended trip to France where they were exposed to the Barbizon painting of Camille Corot (1796-1875) and his contemporaries. The couple returned to the United States the following year, where they settled in Boston. In the company of such American Barbizon painters as William Morris Hunt and Joseph Foxcroft Cole, the Browns honed their pastoral renderings of the New England landscape. As the wife of a well-respected painter, Agnes Brown benefited from her husband’s reputation, encouragement, and lifestyle. However these same privileges tend to obfuscate Agnes Brown’s independent legacy in the historical record as a painter in her own right. While Agnes Brown is rarely considered outside of the context of her husband, however, her paintings retain significant authority on their own. Landscape with White Birch, for example, carries weight as a stand-alone vignette. In Brown’s choice of an arched frame and use of expressive brush strokes to render surprising detail, this pastoral summer scene of a New England landscape ranks among those of her husband and other predominantly male members of the American Barbizon school.
