About the Item

Atmospheric and dramatic seascape painted by two sisters from the famed Nasmyth family of 18th/19th century Scottish artists. The names of A G Nasmyth (Anne Gibson) and Jane Nasmyth are carved on the back stretcher bar. The two sisters were known to work together on occasion, and this work is an important example. Influences by JMW Turner are evident in the mist and cloud of sea with barely visible sails in the distance. Emotive and passionate, this is a rare painting for the traditional landscapes of the time. The sisters capture drama with light and brushstrokes of red and white against the grey and blue grey scene. Figures with red hats and white and golden brown clothing are on the shore and boat. White cliff, a white sail and white waves capture the light through a break in the clouded skies. Anne and Jane Nasmyth were daughters of one of the earliest Scottish landscape artists, Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840). They had three siblings, all successful artists. The eldest, Patrick Nasmyth was best known for his work influenced by Dutch masters. James and Charlotte were also landscape artists. In this painting the romantic influence of JMW Turner’s works of fishermen, seas and atmospheric skies especially in maritime scenes from 1796 to 1803, is evident. Small figures against the wider scene appear with touches of red. White crests of waves, a sail, are almost iridescent in the dimming light. The initials AG (in the style of the period) and NASMYTH are carved into the back upper left wooden stretcher bar. To the right is NASMYTH what appears to be a date, and JANE. This a highly unusual work by two collaborating Nasmyth sisters, after one of the most important British artists. In overall very good condition with only light craquelure visible in the sky on close inspection.

19th century English marine seascape, with fishing boats in the North Sea
Located in Woodbury, CT
William Thornley was a painter of coastal scenes whose work is very similar to Hubert and Charles Thornley, who may have been members of the same family. He painted scenes of genre, architecture, and landscapes as well. A number of the landscapes were of Belgium, Holland, Italy, and Norway. However, it is for his seascapes that he is best remembered. Thornley’s works are beautifully detailed and show a masterful understanding of the moods of both weather and sea. They are often small in size and put together with fine detail and great artistic merit. Thornley’s fishing scenes are spirited and similar in style to those of “Jock” Wilson, and are often painted in pairs. Thornley’s works have always been popular when they appear on the art market. He was believed to have first exhibited marines at the Royal Academy in 1859 from an address in Paddington, London and also at the British Institution from 1861 until it closed in 1867. He continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1898. Thornley also exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Salon of French Artists, receiving an honorable mention in 1881 and a third-place medal in 1888. William Thornley also went by the names Georges William and William...
