Jean-François Baudoin
Au Pied mon Arbre

circa 1910

About the Item

Born in 1870 in Saint-Martin-de-Ré, a beautiful island off the coast of La Rochelle, Jean Franck Baudoin was immersed in the world of art from an early age. His father was a sculptor who worked from a studio in Paris and realizing his son’s latent talents sent him there to live with his uncle. Just nineteen, he became heavily influenced by the Impressionist painters, particularly Monet, Degas and Van Gogh. Although he was already painting, his family thought it wise to get him some formal training. To this end, he enrolled at the Academie Julian where he counted William Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury amongst his teachers and Marcel Baschet and Henri Royer amongst his fellow students. From there he continued his studies as a student of Auguste Trupheme at the Ecole Superieure de Dessin et Graphiques. Once his studies were completed, he embarked on his career as a professional artist. Although oil painting was his passion, it was as a wood engraver that he made his living in those early years. He worked on engravings of the Old Masters such as Holbein and Frans Hals as well as works for his contemporaries such as Eugene Carriere. While still in his twenties, his family bought him a large property near the Gare du Montparnasse which was run as both a hotel and a studio. Baudoin exhibited his paintings frequently at the major Parisian public galleries such as the Société des Artistes Francais, Salon des Independants and the Salon des Tuileries winning numerous medals and prizes. He was also given exhibitions in prestigious private galleries such as the Galerie Charpentier. His paintings are full of vitality and depict views of the Île-de-Ré, Paris and its environs. Jean Franck Baudoin died in the town of Libourne in the Gironde region of France in 1961. His paintings today are held in several important private collections and can be seen publicly at the museums of Paris (Musee du Petit Palais), Nantes and La Rochelle.
