Jean Hippolyte Marchand
Avant garde cubist landscape painting House by the Sea Bloomsbury Group fauve

ca 1920

About the Item

It is fascinating how a painting with so many round shapes can appear so cubist. To my mind, it's because the artist is much more interested in the forms and volumes he sees than in the geographic location he depicts. This gives the landscape a wonderful "unreal" feel - almost as if it belonged to a folk or fairlytale. And this while it couldn't be more modernist! It is a work by Jean Marchand, one of the leading artists of his generation. Marchand (1882-1941) was fauve and cubist painter, printmaker and illustrator who became closely linked to the Bloomsbury Group. In 1910, his painting Still Life with Bananas was exhibited in the 1910 "Manet and Post-Impressionism" show organised by Roger Fry, also shown in 1912 in a second exhibition organised by Fry with Clive Bell at the Grafton Galleries in London. Paintings by Jean Marchand are in the collections of the Courtauld, the Tate, and in numerous museums in Britain and worldwide. The National Gallery of Ireland owns five oils by Marchand. In France, works by the artist are in the Museum of Modern art of the City of Paris as well as in the Museums of Lyon, Marseille, Troyes, Grenoble, Céret, Besançon and Saint Tropez. Dating from the 1920s, our oil on canvas measures 54 x 73 cm, and is signed at the lower right. The overall size in a hand carved "Montparnasse" frame is 69 x 91 cm.

  • Japan Japanese Garden by French naive outsider folk art primitive artist, 1975
    Located in Norwich, GB
A perfect painting for lovers of Japan and those of primitive/naive outside art. It is a work by an internatoanlly noted extraordinary artist with an extraordinary life. Maurice LOIRAND (1922-2008) is born into a working class family in Brittany, near the Atlantic coast coast in France. He starts working as a skilled labourer in the shipyards aged 15. Aged 20, when the Nazis start to occupy the country, he joins the Resistance movement, where he meets and befriends thinkers, painters and poets. He is thus introduced to an artistic and intellectual universe far removed from the world of his origins. Loirand finds himself drawn to art, and soon dedicates all his free time to learn how to paint. Completely self taught, he soon begins to exhibit his pictures alongside high level artists. He moves to Paris in the 1950s, and - although still working as a technician - paints all night. He finally becomes a full time artist in 1968. International travel and a multitude of exhibitions follow. He exhibits in Brazil, Argentina, and with Jean Tiroche Gallery in New York, among others. His work is now shown alongside works by Leger, Matisse and Picasso. The Collector's Guild New York Ltd commissions Maurice Loirand for several works of lithographic art. Loirand discovers Japan in the early 1970s, and decides to stay for 18 years. He marries Kazué SHIMOTORI, a Japanese poet...
