Jean Mannheim
Pathway to the Church, c. 1915

c. 1915

About the Item

Provenance Consigned to the gallery by private collectors Description In Jean Mannheim’s "Pathway to the Church" a lone figure walks up a narrow dirt path through a field lined with stands of eucalyptus trees, heading toward a beautiful white chapel with a red tiled roof and steeple. In the far distance through a gap in the trees, can be seen a fading blue sky and purple range of the San Gabriel mountains. Prominently placed in the foreground are yucca plants, signaling the location as the Arroyo Seco in Pasadena, California. The artist lived on South Arroyo Boulevard along the banks of the Arroyo Seco. It seems to be early evening, when there are few shadows, lending a somber mood to the lovely painting, suggesting the figure seeks either redemption or solace. Frame Wood with gold-tone (metal) finish. Artist Information DAV, Benezit Vol. 9 p. 173 (listed as “Jan”), AIC p. 720, Whos2 p. 2174. • Antique Oil on Canvas Painting "Dancing Nymphs" Mythological Landscape Scene
    Located in Firenze, IT
A luxuriant forest is the romantic and lyrical landscape where the dance of the nude nymphs takes place in this joyful 19th Century antique oil on canvas painting featuring a mythological scene. Dance of the Nymphs and Naiads is a myth inspired by the tales of ancient Greece and ancient Rome, a subject already much loved in the Renaissance period as an allegory of rebirth - as in one of the most famous paintings in the world the Spring by Sandro Botticelli- then reproduced throughout the neoclassicism by academic painters -due to the renewed interest in classical artworks following the discovery of archaeological sites- and taken up later, with ecological purposes and meanings, also by the Barbizon school and Impressionist artists. The present artwork – signed Vagner low left and datable to the second half of the 19th century - is closely inspired by an important work by the great Camille Corot, which is now housed at the Musée d'Orsay (Paris). This historical oil on canvas painting, featuring a joyful scene with the three graces and other dancing nymphs...
