About the Item

Beautifully painted in the post impressionist style a view of the French city of Rouen along the barge lined Seine River by the well known contemporary French artist, Jean Pierre Dubord. Dubord was born in Rouen and currently makes his residence there. The tall church spire to the right in the paining is the Cathedral Notre Dame of Rouen. Signed lower right. Condition is excellent. Circa 1985. The painting is housed in it’s original ornate gold leaf frame with linen liner in fine condition. Overall framed measurements are 32 by 38 inches. Provenance: de Grimme Gallery, Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Rouen, capital of the northern French region of Normandy, is a port city on the river Seine. Important in the Roman era and Middle Ages, it has Gothic churches, such as Saint-Maclou and Saint-Ouen, and a cobblestoned pedestrian center with medieval half-timbered houses. The skyline is dominated by the spires of Cathédrale Notre-Dame, much-painted by Impressionist Claude Monet. Jean-Pierre Dubord was born in Rouen, France in 1949 and has spent most of his life there. He studied Art History and Decorative Arts in a two year course at the Louvre in Paris but is largely a self-taught artist. His first exhibition of thirty oils in Rouen in 1970 was favorably reviewed by the critics. In the same year, he completed his studies in Biochemistry and went to work for a pharmaceutical company. He continued to show his work in galleries and was soon receiving prizes in competitive exhibitions among them an Honorable Mention at the Salon des Artistes Françoise in Paris in 1985. In 1987, Pierre left his position as a chemist to devote his time to a career in painting. Dubord is mostly a landscape painter. His delicate canvasses follow the Seine as it winds through Normandy from Paris to the English Channel. Winter and summer, in light and atmospheric effects that change quickly and constantly, he records village streets, modest dwellings, barge traffic on the river and gardens tended by his fellow Normans. Reaching the sea, he gives us marvelous studies of water and sky in his harbor scenes and beaches. Rouen in the fog, blanketed with snow, the views of the surrounding hills, majestic cathedral spires dimly visible in the mist all subjects of inexhaustible interest to Dubord. Jean-Pierre Dubord’s work has been exhibited throughout France, in Japan and in major exhibitions in galleries across the United States. This wonderful seaport painting is by Jan Simon Knikker Jr. (Dutch, 1911–1990). Knikker was a prolific painter of the Hague school. Judging by the subject and age of the canvas this wonderful depiction of an industrial dutch port is from the 1960's. Signed lower right. Condition is good. Oil on canvas. Overall framed measurements are 23 by 27 inches. Provenance: A upstate, New York collector. Biography artist Jan Simon Knikker (Leiden 1911 – The Hague 1990), known as Jan, was born in Leiden in 1911. He lived and worked in Wassenaar, after that in Voorschoten until 1937 and then in The Hague. Signed with Jan Knikker jr. Son or Jan Simon Knikker sr. He was a student at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague (1928-1932) and of his father Jan Knikker Sr. He painted summer, river and winter landscapes, still lifes and cityscapes in a figurative way in the style of the Hague School. Born in Havelock, New Zealand on April 11, 1878, George Thompson Pritchard studied in Auckland, New Zealand at the Academy of Art, at the Elam School of Art, and at the Melbourne Academy of Fine Arts in 1901. Upon arriving in San Francisco in 1906 in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake and fire, he produced many paintings during his three-year stay in the city. He then spent a few years in Milwaukee before journeying on to Paris for further art study at Académie Julian, and at the Vanderheldt Academy in Amsterdam from 1911 to 1914.
