Ivar Albertovitch Puni, known as Jean Pougny, was born in Kuokkala (now Finland, then in the administrative district of St. Petersburg) in 1892. In 1910, he travelled to Paris for the first time, where he worked at various art academies and discovered Fauvism, Cubism and Japanese art. After his return to St. Petersburg, he took part in several exhibitions together with Exter, Gontcharova and Malévitch. His studio became a meeting place for the Russian avant-garde. On the occasion of a second trip to Paris (1914), Pougny exhibited at the ‘Salon des Indépendants’. Central to the Russian avant-garde, he organised the first Futurist exhibitions in St. Petersburg. In 1921, he exhibited at the gallery ‘Der Sturm’. He was represented in several group exhibitions that took place in Berlin at the beginning of the 1920s. In 1924, he moved to Paris and Frenchified his name: From then on he was called Jean Pougny. His style changed and there was practically nothing left of the Cubo-Futurism and Suprematism of the Russian years. He painted in the style of the Nabis (landscapes, interiors, scenes from Parisian life), but without losing his own character.
