About the Item

Artist Comments
The setting sun transforms an evening walk in an average neighborhood into a vibrant light show. Whispy clouds spread across the sky, reflecting the soft yellow and orange glow. Silhouetted trees and houses add depth and contrast to the vibrant background. It is a tranquil scene that captures the fleeting beauty of a golden sunset.

About the Artist
California artist Jesse Aldana captures the spirit of the West through the ritual beauty of sunrise and sunset. Blending realistic brushwork with an almost surreal absence of human presence, Jesse paints residential neighborhoods, bustling thoroughfares, and serene coastal scenes of Los Angeles. His work, reminiscent of Ed Ruscha, serves as both a record of the region’s evolving landscape and a metaphor for the openness and opportunity that have long drawn settlers to the West Coast. “The sky is an overwhelming presence,” Jesse reflects about California. His compositions emphasize vast skies framed by slender palm trees and low-slung buildings, placing the viewer at the edge of the final frontier. Working from his Los Angeles home studio, Jesse uses his own photographs as source material, drawing inspiration from the vibrant surroundings of his city. He holds a BA from Brown University and an MFA from The New York Academy of Art and frequently exhibits at the Beverly Hills Art Show.

About the artist: "Upon first glance, viewers might think Daniel's works are photographs because of their stunningly realistic elements. However, the longer we look at one of his paintings, the more we become aware that they are anything but a part of our world. We encounter Sprick's paintings not so much as statements, but more as experiences, whereby we engage deeply with his creativity. - Timothy J. Standring, exhibition curator and Gates Foundation Curator at the Denver Art Museum. Daniel Sprick's Fictions: Recent Works includes more than 30 examples of the Colorado artist's portraiture and still life paintings that blur the line between realism and abstraction. His meticulous representation of everyday objects and stirring interpretation of the human form provide viewers a new way to look at the world.
