About the Item

Fine, aged maritime painting of sailing ships in a late evening sky, this oil painting is on old thick wood and period frame. Johannes Keokkeok (1788-1852) is the father of a family of artists. His work centered on maritime scenes, sailing ships such as these in Amsterdam and the Dutch coast. There are similar examples of his work in style and size. This painting is in the Dutch style, after artist Koekkeok. The skies are beautifully done in muted blues, greens and grays, with distant shore, town and other sailboats blending in similar shades in the distance. The frame picks up the ruddy and tan shades of the sails in the center. Rowing boats navigate the waves around the sailboats in the coming darkness. Moody and detailed scene of multiple sailing boats and rowing boats by a port. Framing has wear consistent with age The board has abrasion in back. The painting appears to be in good condition. Some craquelure but stable, and one retouch to a very small spot. The painting is approximately 9" by 6" and the frame is 14.5" by 12.5", early to mid 19th century most likely, with framing in London. No signature found. A small gem! Well priced for an original early oil maritime painting. Ready to hang with the rustic aged frame, or re-frame in your own style.

Dutch School, 17th century oil painting on board, this work features a golden ship on blue seas with white crests against a stormy clouded sky. Dramatic and masterful. Presented in overall very good condition in what may be the original mahogany wood frame. Excellent for an office, library, den or study, but can also be effective in a living room, dining room or bedroom. The frame has a rich wood tone. Easy to ship and ready to hang.
