Francesco Coppola CastaldoItalian Impressionist Oil on Board Marine Landscape Painting Naples Bay ViewLate 19th Century
Late 19th Century
About the Item
Everyday fishermen life is captured in this wonderful Italian impressionist late 19th century oil painting on thin board titled fishermen ashore. We love the neutral and natural color palette the painter used to photograph a moment of daily life in a seaside village in the bay of Naples and the wonderful texture.
The marine landscape fills us with calm, numerous shades of blue, gray, green and brown are painted with strong brushstrokes that give this view a wonderful texture, lively and compact at the same time. The painting is very realistic but the painter manages to immerse the viewer in an evocative and romantic atmosphere with late afternoon light reflecting on the sea and the autumnal tones fine touches of white gouache pick out the light.
The fishermen seem to have ended their fishing day, some are untangling their nets and others are taking care of their boats the landscape is dominated by Vesuvius in the background surrounding the bay.
The painting is housed in a fine walnut molded and parcel gilt frame. Signed 'F Coppola Castaldo' low left .

Artist’s Biography:
Francesco Coppola Castaldo (Naples 1847-1916) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, under the guidance of Giuseppe Mancinelli and Domenico Morelli. There he knew his companions Stanislao Sidoti and Gustavo Mancinelli, son of one of his professor.
Very early and very prolific, he made his debut at the "Salvator Rosa" Promoter in Naples in 1863, maintaining a continuous participation, up to the 1911 exhibition.
He preferably painted in oil, tempera or gouache and was a renowned landscape painter. He taught painting at the municipal high school of Naples and was also an honorary professor at the Academy where he had studied. His works "Un boschetto", "At the decline of the day" and "On the shore of the sea", exhibited at the exhibitions of the Promoter of 1872, 1877 and 1881, were purchased by the Kings of Italy Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I.
The painter's favorite subjects were views of Naples and neighboring areas, rural scenes and more rarely scenes of religious subjects, inspired by the work of Morelli whose studio he frequented. In addition to the exhibitions of the Neapolitan Promoter, it exhibits an exhibition in Genoa, Milan, Turin, Rome and Florence.
In 1870 he participated - together with other painters active in Naples, including Giuseppe Boschetto, Camillo Miola, Giuseppe De Nigris - in the German Gallery of New Bond Street in London, with two works: "A scene near Naples" and "An Afternoon "

"Still Imagined" Oil painting
Located in Denver, CO
Todd Carpenter's (US based) "Still Imagined" is an oil painting that depicts a black and white landscape with leafless trees and saplings together in the dark
Bio/artist statement:
Todd Carpenter is a Los Angeles based artist who uses black and white paint to explore the perception of space and beauty. Carpenter's formal education is in science - he holds a MS in Neuroscience from UCSD and a BS in Psychobiology from UCLA - and he brings this background into service when making art. His paintings explore the mechanisms of perception and aesthetics, examining among other things how the depiction of light can impart realism and convey emotion. Like his paintings bridging art and science, Carpenter's career has similarly straddled the two fields, and he has taught subjects ranging from neuroscience and environmental science to photography and painting.
Artist Statement
As a painter, I am particularly interested in how the depiction of light contributes to our experience of paintings. Painting, as with any visual art, is obviously dependent on light. But painting can also have a more specific connection in that the accurate depiction of light is crucial for achieving realism. Realism in paintings largely arises from the portrayal of depth - perceiving a painting as being realistic is equivalent to seeing its subject as existing in more than just the two dimensions of the picture plane - and one of the mechanisms by which humans perceive depth is through lighting cues. Light creates features such as shading, shadow, and contrast that tell us about the three-dimensional arrangement of our surroundings, and artists often use these features to impart realism to paintings.
Light also factors in to the emotional impact of paintings. The differential illumination of our surroundings can evoke different moods, as evidenced by the influence sunsets, candlelight, and darkness can have on us. Such effectssuggest that our perception of light could be tied to primitive instincts, with light signaling factors such as shelter, nightfall, and warmth, which were once crucial for survival. The depiction of light in paintings...
