About the Item

John F. Carlson Forest Landscape, circa 1925 Signed lower right Watercolor on paper Sight 21 x 24 1/2 inches The native Swede John Fabian Carlson became a household name in New York art circles during the early 20th century, training at the Albright School of Art with Lucius Hitchcock and the Art Students League with Frank Vincent DuMond. In 1906, Carlson was instrumental in relocating the League's summer school from Connecticut to Woodstock, New York, where he depicted the still beauty of the surrounding countryside in fine Tonalist landscapes. In 1911, he received an award at the Swedish-American Exhibition in Chicago and was elected as an Associate member of the National Academy of Design. Soon after, the Art Students League chose him to lead the Woodstock School of Landscape Painting. In 1912, the Salmagundi Club gave him the Vezin Prize for his watercolors and honored him with the first Isidor Prize. The next year, Carlson earned a silver medal from the Washington Society of Artists. In 1915, Carlson won a silver medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. In 1918, the National Academy of Design awarded him the Carnegie Prize and the Altman First Prize. The following year, he stepped down from being the director of the Woodstock School of Landscape Painting. In 1920, Carlson started teaching during the summer at the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 1922, he established the John F. Carlson School of Landscape Painting in Woodstock. Three years later, he became a full member of the National Academy of Design. In 1928, Carlson wrote a teaching book called Elementary Principles of Landscape Painting. This book was printed again in 1953, 1958, 1970, and 1973. Later editions have been titled Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting. Carlson's paintings are in numerous museum collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago; Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and Maier Museum of Art, Randolph-Macon Women's College, Lynchburg, Virginia.

George Gardner Symons (1863 - 1930) Winter Scene Oil on canvas 20 x 25 inches Signed lower right Provenance: Private Collection, St. Louis, Missouri William A. Karges Fine Art Gallery, Carmel, California Private Collection, Washington A landscape and marine artist, George Symons was one of America's more noted plein-air painters who combined styles of impressionism and realism. His works are cited for their energy and simplicity, and he often did panoramic views. He was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1861, with the name of George Gardner Simon, but he changed his last name to Symons when he returned from study in England because of concern about anti-semitism. Not much is known about his early life. He first studied at the Chicago Art Institute where he became a close, life-long friend of William Wendt. They painted together in California and then in Cornwall, England in 1898. He also studied in Paris, and Munich and London, and joining a colony of artists at St. Ives, adopted the plein-air techniques of Julius Olsson, Adrian Stokes, and Rudolph Hellwag. He worked in Chicago as a commercial artist, and about 1903 returned to California with Wendt and built a studio in Laguna Beach and became active in western art societies including the California Art Club. He returned often, but maintained his primary studio...
