About the Item
'Holly's Pond' is a winter plein air landscape painting by the acclaimed Canadian artist John Joy. The snow covered banks of the pond and leafless birches suit the muted colour palette of the piece and create a sense of peace in the landscape.
John Joy (b. 1925, d. 2012).
Working directly onto board he was known to avoid the intermediary step of reference photographs. He believed light captured by the eye in the moment provided a truer sense of a place than any photograph could capture and wanted to continue Canada's strong tradition of plein air painters. Joy was a founding member of the Society of Canadian Artists and was a member of the Toronto Arts and Letters club.
