John Rathbone
18th century English oil landscape with river and figures fishing by a cottage

1790

$6,500

About

18th century English oil landscape with river and figures fishing by a cottage and others out walking. John Rathbone was a British landscape artist working in the late 18th Century to the early 19th Century. He was born at Rockferry, Wirral, in Cheshire. The artists George Morland and Julius Caesar Ibbetson often collaborated with Rathbone, painting the figures in his landscapes. The British Museum possesses three of Rathbone's watercolor drawings, all of which are landscapes with figures, and there is a landscape in oils in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and two hang in the Peel Park Art Gallery, Salford. Between 1785 and 1806 Rathbone exhibited forty-eight landscapes at the Royal Academy and two at the Society of Artists. He also exhibited three landscapes at the exhibition of the Society of Artists in Liverpool in August 1774. This is a very fine example of the artist's work and typical of the palette, paint application, and subjects that made him so well known. The painting is framed in an Antique English giltwood frame that might have been the original to the painting. This is a perfect painting for almost any room in a home, like a bedroom, study, den, family room hallway, or even standing on an easel on a table. The complementary colors for this piece are Beige, Brown, Green, Blue, Tope, off white, black, red
