Capitola (California) is an oil on board painting by Jon Blanchette (1908-1987) circa 1955. About the Artist:
Jon Blanchette (1908-1987) was born in Somerset, England on March 29, 1908 and in 1918 he immigrated to Battle Creek, Michigan. Artistically inclined at age six, he later studied at the Pittsburgh Art Institute. In 1932 he and his wife Jean moved to Los Angeles where he worked for Fox Studios painting, doing architectural design, interior decorating, and stage sets. In 1948 he abandoned commercial work and settled in Aptos, California where he painted fine art and taught privately. During the summers of 1965-75 he held workshops in Mendocino. A romantic realist, he was primarily an oil painter but was also proficient with pen & ink, watercolor, and silk screen. Blanchette died in Aptos on July 3, 1987.

Jon Blanchette
Jon Blanchette was born in Somerset, England, in 1908. He immigrated to Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1918. Artistically inclined at age six, he later studied at the Pittsburgh Art Institute, where he received his BA. In 1932, Blanchette moved to Los Angeles, where he painted, did the architectural design, interior decorating and stage sets for Fox Studios. In 1948, he settled in Aptos, California, where he painted fine art and taught privately. During the summers of 1965–75, Blanchette held workshops in Mendocino. A romantic realist, he was primarily an oil painter but was also proficient with pen & ink, watercolor, and silkscreen. Blanchette died in Aptos in 1987. He had a membership for the Santa Cruz Art League and Marin County Artists. Blanchette exhibited at Santa Cruz Women's Club, 1959, and stood first in the Santa Cruz County Art Competition, Aptos Art Center, 1965.

About the Artist:
Marjorie Bell Chambers (Marjorie Bell, Marjorie Chambers) was born in New York in 1923. In 1943, she graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Art History and political science and went on to earn a Master of Arts (M.A.) from Cornell University in 1948. She married physicist, William H. Chambers in 1945 and the couple moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico a few years later where he worked in the National Laboratory. Chambers spent the following years raising their children and worked as a substitute teacher in Los Alamos. In 1974, Marjorie Chambers received a PhD in History and Political Science at the University of New Mexico. She went on to serve on the faculty of the University of New Mexico and served as dean of the Midwest region of the Union Institute Graduate School. Marjorie Chambers served as the first woman president of Colorado Women's College (a division of the University of Denver). Chambers also served as president of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). A lifelong advocate for women's rights, Dr. Marjorie Bell Chambers was appointed her to the National Advisory Council on Women's Educational Programs in 1976 by President Gerald Ford. About the Artist:
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Alfred Wands graduated from the Cleveland School of Art with honors. Following that, he spent six months in Paris studying at the Academie Julian. In the late 1920's, Wands returned to Ohio to teach painting at the Cleveland School of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
In 1930, Wands moved to Denver to direct the art program at Colorado Women's College. He remained at the Women's College for the next 17 years. During his time in Denver, Wands frequently traveled to Taos, New Mexico. He and his family spent eleven summers there between 1930 and 1940.
By 1943, he had become the Camp Artist at the YMCA of the Rockies, where he taught summer art classes. He later became the Chairman of their Religious Programs and Adult Advisory Committees. By 1947, he quit his teaching position at the Colorado Woman's College to devote full time to his painting. By 1955, Wands opened his own studio and gallery in Estes Park, Colorado.
Known as the "Dean of Colorado Landscape Painters", he served three times as the President of the Denver Artists Guild. He was the Chairman of the Denver Art Commission for 16 years. Wands was a long-time member of the Denver Artists Guild and the Denver Art Commission.
