About the Item
A fine Egyptian archaelogical oil painting by American artist Joseph Lindon Smith (1863-1950). Smith was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and after attending Brown University and MIT, he studied art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and traveled worldwide studying and painting archeological sites, including Egypt, Japan, India, Honduras, China, Korea, and Iran, just to name a few. He lived most of his life in New Hampshire and became well known for his archeological paintings and eventually became honorary curator of the Egyptian department at the Boston Museum, as well as a teacher at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Harvard.
Oil on canvas, signed upper left, inscribed on verso label “Interior Luxor Temple Columns with Ramses Statues,” an unidentified exhibition or gallery label “Ramses at Karnak, c.1920,” and an additional 1974 gallery label from McNay Art Institute (San Antonio, TX), as well as a Doll & Richards (Boston, MA) gallery label, and housed in a simple stained wooden frame. Joseph Lindon Smith
Joseph Lindon Smith was born and raised in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from 1880–82 and continued his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1883–85.
