DESCRIPTION
In this large-format oil painting, Joan Gil i Gil depicts a Catalan rural landscape dominated by a Romanesque bell tower silhouetted against a vibrant, cloud-filled sky. The rich, impasto brushwork builds both the texture of the reddish earth and the volumes of the vegetation and whitewashed walls of the houses. The composition balances the architectural solidity of the village with the freshness of the cultivated fields in the foreground, achieving harmony between the human and the natural.
The color palette—dominated by ochres, earthy reds, and greens contrasted with light blues—conveys the luminosity of an autumn morning, where the atmosphere plays as central a role as the forms themselves. The perspective, with a path leading toward the village, invites the viewer to step into the scene.

BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST
Joan Gil i Gil (Barcelona, 1900 – 1984) was a Catalan painter trained at the Escola de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi and later in Paris. A drawing and painting instructor, he developed a varied body of work that includes landscapes, portraits, and dance scenes. He participated in numerous group exhibitions and official contests, earning awards such as the Third Medal at the National Exhibition of Barcelona in 1941 and the Second Medal in 1944.
His style is characterized by vigorous, impasto brushwork and rich color, clearly influenced by Mediterranean Post-Impressionism. His works are held in institutions such as the Museu d’Art Modern de Barcelona and the Museu del Teatre.
